So far I was playing 7$ and 15$ 45 and 180 man sngs, but about 2 months ago I just started playing 9 man sngs with same buyin. Played about 700 games and my roi is +16 (i know small sample). My question is when should I move up? I have to cash out every month, since poker is paying all my expenses, but my bankroll is about 4k now, so is it stupid to play 7$ sngs and add 15$ when there are not many regs? How many games would be enough to move up and should I move up at all, since I am bankroll nit since I started playing poker? With 15$ sngs you can make good money, so should I just stay with with that? Do you have any rule of thumbs for your students?
Thanks for all answers in this thread! Best reading this week for sure!
Hey. Great question. Since poker is paying your living expenses, you need to determine how much expendable income you have. You should also make sure that you are comfortable with your live expenses even if you lose your expendable income.

If you decide to move, do so gradually. If you want to completely move up at once and can't afford it, it may come as a big shocker when you lose and your losses are more than doubled automatically because of the 2x+ buy in.

Sort out your real life situation before considering moving up.

Bank Account Management is always more important than bankroll management.

A million in what?

I think over my lifetime I'll earn a million. But that's not very impressive because millions of people do to.

It's funny how sharkscope works isn't it? Linear red lines become impressive to most. What's weird is, if you made a graph of any persons job (in any field), it would far surpass anything on sharkscope and would be completely linear. Now those are graphs I'd like to see.

I never played HU except for a few random 2.20s vs abarone68. anyone wanna post sharkscope results of those? lol

HU is a very important part of the game though, but it mostly just comes from having a solid thinking process.

Once a player knows how to think, he or she can improvise, create, bend rules, break rules, and invent things on their own.
Thanks Matt for helping me realize this and make poker fun again! Enjoy (grind) retirement and fatherhood.

From your experience as coaching how many bis should be the worst downswing in each format(not bellow ev but real bis) and not from a crusher but from a decent/competitive reg in each format

2/6/9/18/45/180 man

Good question! I wanna know Matt's answer to this, as the unluckiest player ever (one of many i know) I bet I have had bigger downswings than Matt says they should be...

great question! I'm not too sure on specifics, but here are my genuine estimates...

2 - unsure
6 - 40-50
9 - 50
18 - 60
45 - 75
180 - 100

For someone who "abides by the rules" so to speak, you may see these...

2 - unsure
6 - 60-70
9 - 80-100
18 - 100
45 - 150
180 - 200

Re: Glitlr's Well - A retired poker player

Those estimates all seem very low. How did you come up with them? There isn't a one answer that fits all to this question as different ROIs are attainable under different conditions. I, personally have surpassed all your estimates.
