OMG what a choke!

I haven't watched football for quite a while, so correct me if I'm wrong, but that was the most stupid play calling in history!
02-01-2015 , 11:03 PM
It was second down with 50 something seconds. They could have run it twice instead of letting the clock run down and passing it. Right?
02-01-2015 , 11:10 PM
Put it in the hands of lynch.
02-01-2015 , 11:44 PM
I think Pete Carroll should pay out everyone who lost money on that game/call

Old man is super-confused about part of the ending there. Seattle still has a timeout and New England 2, yet the Pats let the clock run down from 1:00 to ~25 seconds after the first Marshawn run to leave them little/no time if Seattle scores. Wha?

My recollection/the box score play-by-play may be incorrect, otherwise that was super-duper-horrible game management erased by one huge Seattle mistake.
02-02-2015 , 12:29 AM
Pats let the clock run so Seattle has just one shot, not two.

Why does Seattle let clock run?
02-02-2015 , 12:36 AM
They have a timeout, the clock stops on any incomplete pass, and you don't want NE to have time to score *if* you get a TD.

It's probably a good call on 2nd down by Seattle from a time/game management perspective - run the clock down under 30 seconds when the Pats let you, and call a pass play. That way, the clock stops on any incomplete and you have 2 Marshawn shots from there. Pats just hit their 1-outer on the step-in-front/RW not reading such.

Your only time issue after running the clock under 30 seconds (from Seattle's perspective) is really if there's an automatic 1st down penalty (defensive holding, PI, etc.) and you all of a sudden have 4 downs again.

<<<<Or something, still confused.

Jay is correct. Worst play call of all time. Seahawks win that game with a running play or two. Wilson is terrific at avoiding tackles and they needed only like 6 yards for a TD. So many options available (pass to the back corner of the end-zone, QB run, RB run, Mid-zone pass to the back of the end zone). Anything BUT a short pass to a receiver in front of or at the goal-line. Terrible play, awful coaching at crunch time IMO.

Gramps, part of it also is that the play before the goal line play was that absurd kearse catch and it looked like no one thought he caught it so I'm not sure anyone on the NE sideline was yelling to call a TO in the 15-20 seconds before Seattle does

Edit: I might be wrong about the exact sequence of events, I'm pretty drunk
02-02-2015 , 12:41 AM
But also yes, I have to think that lynch up the middle 2 plays in a row gets in 1.5 yards like 99% of the time
02-02-2015 , 12:55 AM
So glad NE drew that offsides instead of taking the safety so i didnt have to stay awake thinking about that half point.

That luckbox catch followed by that freak pick has gotta be one of the sickest swings in sports history given the stage.

Agreed. Sick swing.
02-02-2015 , 01:51 AM
That kearse catch will sadly be forgotten because they didn't win, but if they did win it would be a top 5 all time catch.

Would have gone down as better than the Tyree catch I think. But yeah, obv not now.

Yeah I guess a lot of people crucifying the playcall are being results orientated. But a slant up the middle when you have no good receivers seems a little iffy. Some kind of out or corner route near OOB seems like a safer route. That pick prob happend 2/100 times or something so IDK. Lynch is good at getting extra yards on plays but Sea O line hasnt seemed to be that good in goalline sits.

I was saying "WTF is going on?" before and during that play.
