The well: goofball

Quote:
A stranger is being shown around a village that he has just become part of. He is shown a well and his guide says "On any day except Friday, you can shout any question down that well and you'll be told the answer"

The man seems pretty impressed, and so he shouts down: Why not on Friday? and the voice from in the well shouts back: Because on Friday, it’s your day in the well
You guys all know the drill. I'm posting this as early in the day as possible, I'll probably go to bed in an hour and be around most of the day tomorrow.

Just so people can ask more pointed questions:

All my income since Jan '05 has been from poker. 95%+ limit holdem. I lived in Vegas or 2.5 years, played up to 1/2 with the most hours logged at 15/30, 30/60 and 50/1 (since moving to Seattle) in that order. I've played lots online too, from .5/1 to 30/60 (oh, party poker) Currently playing 3/6 and trying to learn PLO (oh it's much better than stupid NLH) I grew up learning and teaching gymnastics, competed until I left high school and teaching is the only non-poker job I've had; I have a degree in a physics and one (almost) in economics.

Re: The well: goofball

would you rather let yourself die, or 1 million random people in the world die?

the catch is that those 1 million random people are chosen from only people you have never met and who otherwise not impact on your life in any way.

how come i always lose when i play 8/16 in vegas? do i just suck that much, or is it all in my head, or what?

do you miss teaching/working with kids? do you think you'll go back to it someday?

what was the last "a-ha!" experience you had in LHE? in PLO?

Goofball. Thanks for being in the well. You seem to have very original post titles. "the long and winding road" etc. Where do you get your inspiration for these titles?

Can you describe what the party games (mid imits) were like at their softest? What kind of mistakes were these fish in these games making? What are your poker goals?(medium and long term)

Cool, I used to be a gymnast too. 3 questions:
What's your fav apparatus?
Are you still able to do the split?
You suffer any serious injury thru gymnastics?

Re: The well: goofball

Will you stake me in a 30/60 LHE game of your choosing the next time I go to Vegas? I can buy in for 1/6th of the action. Playing live 30/60 would be exciting for me.

Re: The well: goofball

you threw me with the up to 1/2 statement but I assume that means you are playing 100/200 .

Explain what the difference is between PLO and NLH (not the game rules but the action) and why you consider it better.

Why the move to Seattle?

What specific advice do you have for someone trying to move out of the micros?

Who are you more like, Calvin or Hobbes?

Re: The well: goofball

What was your longest loosing streak (in terms of how long) and how much did your BR dip during this period? How did you cope?

Boxers or briefs?

How would you settle the conflict in the middle east? (I had to ask).

Re: The well: goofball

What's your first name?
What kind of car do you drive?
Why have you stuck with Limit instead of moving to NL like a lot of players have?
What is the most over rated strategy advice in the micros lately? Misused?
How would you rate the strategy advice in the micros compared to other forums on 2p2?
Not to get too personal, and you can PM me if you'd rather, what was your hourly rate since 05 playing poker?
How do you think the video coaching sites will change the games today?
At what point in your poker career did things start to "click" and you realized that you were going to be really good at the game?

Favorite beer?

Favorite hard liquor to drink straight?

Favorite mixed drink?

How'd you get started in poker? How long have you been playing? What significant events happened along the way to where you are today? I always like to hear a little of the poker stories of players I respect.

Relating to Tyler's question about HULA, what do you estimate is the probability that the best player in the past MicroHULA beats the worst player in this past MicroHULA? How often would you estimate that someone like TheBryce beats you in a HULA-format match? How close to a coinflip do you estimate it is?

I'd probably choose to live but who knows. If i'd already procreated it might be different.

We ran bad. It's probably easier to mentally check out a little and not stay quite as focused when your team is down in a week or out of the playoffs all together.

Wow, so so hard.

OK, so there's one story where he doesn't want to go to school and he turns into spaceman spiff andmakes a break for it. Then we he gets caught he says "give me liberty of give me death zogwarg queen." It also leads to the following exchange:

Calvin: I was going to skip school but i got caught
susie: what happened
calvin: mom had the wind for that final sprint. I couldn't believe it when she cleared the hedge

next
Calvin: Mom, I want you to know I've been saying all the snot I sneeze to donate for mucus transfustion.
Mom: CALVIN that's disgusting, no one needs those.
Calvin: Oh. I have a jar for you to wash.

next
the bug collection story
"so far i have a worm, a piece of lint that looks like a bug, a drowned ant and a smashed fly"

First you're probably running bad - remember only 30 hands/hr. Second you're probably playing not to lose. Do you obsess about large pots, get scared to make moves, get afrad to fold because itmeans losing a pot with all that money? Do you want to quit when you're ahead 7-10 bets, and stay when behind to get unstuck? Moving up is hard. Especially when you run bad. Usually the way you get comfortable in agame is crushing it for a bit. Keep taking your shots and just try to play your same game and wait for a good run of cards.
Lastly, don't worry if a couple of times you wanna leave after getting up a rack or so. It's a lot of money and if you're nervous about giving it back you won't play well. Don't just automatically leave of course, we should always stay when we're winning. Everyone is human though and locking up a win in a new game can be a good confidence boost.

Survive long enough to procreate.

Or do what makes you happy - do things that maximize the sum of happiness over your life. (i.e. going through a training program you hate to get ot a job you love)

Very much, it's fun and I like gymnastics. I'm taking a 2 days/week class for adults and I can't help but give them all pointers. The instructors cool with it though since we used ot work together. I think I will get back ot it someday. My goal is to eventually own my own gymnastics school. Right now though I'm looking to do something different than every job I've ever had.

what was the last "a-ha!" experience you had in LHE? in PLO?
PLO - a card hit on the river and it just dinged in my head "that card fits with the story i've told this guy" and i just bluffraised. In limit holdem he'd have snap called but since it was PLO he probably folded the second nuts or something. People are way to nitty I think and it's important to look for spots to bluff-raise and punish them. That said folding a lot against most regulars is correct (at .5/1 where i've been playing) since except for a few obvious lines people always have what they're representing.

LHE - One very cool one a while that happened at limit holdem: I raise UTG iwth 88, lady 3towns a couple of spots down. When it came back to me it just occurred to me to raise so I did. flop came like AQ4 and I bet and she folded. It was the first step in me learning to listen to the little voice in my head that says to bet/raise/call/fold from time to time. I didn't go through any conscious thought process before deciding to raise, it just occurred to me. It's your subconscious mind that goes through the thought process and generally it does a very very good job.

There's also a strategic aha! in the hand. Sometimes there's a way to play your hand on one street that makes your whole life easier on the next street. First my 4bet will incline her to fold things like JJ on A or K high flops. Second it will make any raise by her on the flop very very honest. Third it will tilt the **** out of her if I hit the board and win a large pot. All that for one extra small bet preflop, who could say no? :-)

Word. Nothing makes you want to be dead more than a bunch of kids running around.
