Session Reviews

Hi

Do these still exist anymore?

I'm back playing after about 18 months off.

I signed up to the session reviews back then and found them really useful.

Used to play Stars full ring $0.25/$0.50 but those games are dead now so I play 6 max.

I'd love someone to review a session or 2 and let me know how I'm getting on. I've no doubt I've got leaks.

Re: Session Reviews

Hi Gaminator22,

I also play at Stars $0,25/$0,50 6-max tables and I would love to discuss hands with someone from those stakes.

Though I should point out that, that I've got plenty of leaks myself.

That said, if you want to contact me, please send PM to BBB and he will give you my contact details (my account here doesn't have PM privileges).

Re: Session Reviews

Hi Avataren

A few people have offered to review hands for me. Maybe they'd review some hands for you too.

I'll happily review a couple of hundred hands for you if you like. I'm no expert hence wanting someone to review my hands but I'm happy to help.

Pm me if you're interested and I'll send you my email address to send the hands to.

Cheers

Re: Session Reviews

I thought about posting a new thread to ask this question, but it's related to session reviews so I'm leaving it here. Hopefully since it's one of only two active threads someone will see it and respond to it .

I'm doing gaminator22's session review and there's one villain who I saw do the following (at a 5-handed PokerStars .25/.50 table):

- coldcall a raise from the SB (where the SB is 40% of the BB) TWICE
- limped JJ from MP then played it like it was the stone cold nuts for all 3 streets on a [6d 9h 8h 2h] [6c] board with 3 other villains in the pot. Later limped A7o in the same position and then triple-barreled a flopped ace.
- TWICE did not raise the turn after floating a flop in position and binking a high pair on the turn in a BvB situation
- twice bet the river after the other two villains in the pot showed weakness on the turn (and it worked both times), but a third time did not bet the river heads up after hero did the raise-pre-bet-flop-and-turn-check-river line (and the time he checked behind he had second pair!)

The first 2 bullets above are CLEARLY bad plays (well, except triplebarreling the flopped ace) and it's not really even worth discussing otherwise.

The only POSSIBLE justification I could see for not raising the turn after binking a high pair is if the villain has a read on the hero that the hero will triplebarrel worse. But if a villain is so bad that he'll open limp and coldcall raises, how could they *possibly* be paying that much attention?

As far as the fourth bullet, I would be prepared to check-call marginal hands on the river against this villain.

So here's the question I have: Is it too soon to classify this villain as a level 1 thinking fish?

For a particular example, if I have AJo in the big blind and a thinking player has openraised, I'll just call (the GTO play), but if I think the raiser is a level 1 thinker I'll 3-bet AJo to take the initiative all day.

For another example, if I think a villain is a level 1 thinker and he employs the call-flop-raise-turn line on me, I'll put him on at LEAST top pair on the turn every time and play accordingly. This villain though? He's not raising high pairs on the turn, so what *does* he raise on the turn? How do I adjust to him?

Hope that made any semblance of sense.

EDIT: Just to state it for the record, most of my LHE experience is on Bovada where literally 9 times out of 10 the villains have exactly what their betting pattern SAYS they have, so these PokerStars sessions reviews are making my head spin a bit!

Re: Session Reviews

Hi DalTXColtsFan,

Not sure, if this answers your questions, but if I had to guess, I'd say that those notes imply, that Villain is either erratic 70/20 player or more likely a (semi) loose-passive fish, who sometimes grossly overplays strong hands and who likes to take a stab at abandoned pots on the river. I have notes on several ~ 40/10 players, who tried to bluff on the river in 3W or even 4W pots, when other players showed weakness on the flop and/or turn.

Re: Session Reviews

If enough people are interested in doing monthly session reviews, we can find someone willing to facilitate. They are the single best way to get better at poker, imo. For a long time, BigBadbabar set them up. I took over for a while. After me, Dragon did it. Believe they stopped due to lack of interest -- once it got down to 3 people, just didn't seem worth it. They work best with a decent pool of people who switch partners over time. We used to do 200 hands, but iirc it was Bellatrix who suggested you got the same benefit for a lot less time (especially in 6m games) with only 100 hands.

If there is a decent sized pool of people who want to do this monthly, I'd be happy to try to find a coordinator and handle the mod stuff. In the past, we posted a stuck thread with match-ups. The facilitator also kept track of people who failed to do their agreed reviews (for a while, they couldn't participate again until they made good). If people want added incentives, say temp-bans for people who flake, that can happen. If someone really carries the ball, gets this going, and organizes session reviews for a while, I'd be willing to go to bat for an under-title -- no guarantees, as it takes a good track record to land one.

If there's anything I can do to help this happen, let me know. Micros session reviews have been some of the best parts of micros LHE for a long time. People make long-time friends, as well. Great job getting this going, guys and gals.

Re: Session Reviews

DougL - thank you for your passionate response - I agree, session reviews are a great way to improve. One suggestion I have: Could we try just stickying this thread and letting people spontaneously post when they would like a session review or when they're willing to do a session review? Since there's so few of us that might work more efficiently for now, and if all of a sudden we start seeing 10, 20, 30 people interested then it might be time to switch to a more organized approach. What do you think?

Re: Session Reviews

Gaminator22: I'm almost done with your session review, you should have your hands within a couple days.

Avataren or prtylb: Would either of you like to review 100 or so of my hands? I'll probably play .05/.10 on Bovada (anoymous tables).

Re: Session Reviews

One other general suggestion (salute) I'd make is to include stats and/or reads on the villains as much as possible.

Done

Generally we don't leave stuck threads open, but this could be a fine exception. If you need any help, feel free to PM.

Just to let everyone know, Gaminator22 replied to the session review I gave him and said he found it helpful, so one down!

prtylb, Avataren - been awhile since we last posted on here - either of you still interested in reviewing some of my hands?

Re: Session Reviews

Hey DTXCF, I'd take a look at your hands too.

We have 918 hands of history on Merge in my DB, so I've a decent idea of how you play and how you'd be perceived by opponents with a clue, FWIW. Though it's obviously been awhile.

Re: Session Reviews

prtylb, I have a couple pieces of feedback, and I'm hoping you wont mind if I post them here so I can get other posters' opinions as well:

1. Ask the person who's sending you hands to send them in chronological order. That was my fault - I could have sworn I exported them in chronological order but the text file had them in REVERSE chronological order. Obviously reviewing the hands chronologically allows a reviewer to pay attention to reads.

2. My personal recommendation is to just add your comments right to the text file instead of making a separate file, like in my example below. I think that just makes everything easier to follow without having to jump around. I had trouble reconciling your review with my original set of hands (I think I've got it now though).

I welcome any counteropinions to my own.

Re: Session Reviews

Hi DalTXColtsFan,

thank you for your feedback. I appreciate it.

I actually didn't even notice, that hands in your text file were in reverse chronological order. I imported .txt file into PT4 right away after you sent it to me, found out the oldest session/table and then reviewed hands chronologically using PT4 hand replayer.

I'd prefer using Word/OpenOffice documents for my review, because they're more comfortable to read than .txt files. Also, the review partner can very easily write feedback in the same document in another font and/or another color.

Hey man, anyone free to look at a short session? Played at 0.1/0.2 6max.

I can review in return though my comments should be taken with a generous pinch of salt, since I'm very much still learning the ropes.

Also can I float the idea of a skype group again? A few names are popping up in this thread that seem active. I used a couple of groups back when I played NL and they really cut the learning curve. Post on here or PM if interested and we can go from there.
