15BB Challenge to the Micros

No asking for permission, suggestions, etc. Here is it, the 15BB Challenge to the Micros.

Why: As we follow our BR nit journey through the limits, each new limit is a big shock. Here's a way to parlay a short rush up through limits and gain experience. Given the low initial buy-in (relative to your total BR), you are risking very little RoR wise.

HOW: you pick a starting level. You turn off auto rebuy, and you buy in for 15 big bets. You go bust, you go bust. You don't have to go all-in; you can quit whenever you want. When you hit 15BB (big bets) for the next limit, you quit and take your new "bankroll" to that limit. Rinse and repeat. If you're on FTP, you get a nice 8/16 level to help you up. On PS, you have a big jump from 5/T to 10/20. You can choose to play to your BB or quit immediately. Your chances of moving up are slightly better if you sit out right away, but if you're in a good game, you're sacrificing EV. No sissy moving down.

When can I quit? Whenever you want. It it probably a good idea to have an idea of "life changing money". For example, a .5/1 player who makes it to 15/30 would have ~$500 in front of him and potentially an amount larger than his whole BR on the table. The idea is to reset your threshold of fear and play at new limits. Quit then, or consider it an insane parlay. All up to you.

What limit do I start? It depends on you. I'd recommend starting at your highest normal limit or one limit higher, if you're comfortable with your BR. The idea is to chase a win up to see new heights. Play 6m, FR, or HUHU. As long as it is LHE, I don't care.

What do you get?
I'm offering two $5, American prizes.

One prize to the person who plays the highest as part of the challenge. To qualify, you have to move up three limits. From the start. So, if you start at 2/4, you need to play at least 10/20 (or 8/16 on FT).

The next $5 prize is to the player who winds up playing the furthest above their normal limit (let's say that is the highest limit where PTR shows you have 10k+ hands or well determine some other way if you don't have 10k hands). Let's say you have to move up at least twice. So, if you're normally a .1/.2 player, you start the challenge at .5/1 (because you're a baller and can spare the $15), and you win up at 5/10, you'd be 6 limits higher than your normal limit and have a good shot at this.

All prizes by transfer either on PS or FT, disputes resolved at my discretion.

Other prizes? Post 'em here. More the better. Person offering the prize is the final judge on the award.

When? Now. Post that you're starting here. I'll check the thread after the weekend and start shipping winnings to my two prizes. Go for it. Post graphs, session summaries from HEM, and whatever else goes. Have fun. Someone mentioned that the record for one of these was 50/100, but I have no idea. I'm putting out my $10 to get this started. Go forth and prosper. Play as many times as you like.

I'm sure others will come up with better, but here are some old threads.
Old threads:

Here
Here not exactly the same thing
Here

Go forth and be epic, micros.

Re: 15BB Challenge to the Micros

I'll be in. Start at 1/2, somewhere. Prolly should have another category for me though. Fewest hands to butso 1/2 hates me and so does Stars. I hate FT so options are limited. Before I start I will see what BoDog steps and game selection are like. Prolly not a great option for this.

Xylo you have any words for me about that review that might help me with this?

One-tabling? Blah...

I might do a two-table cross-site analysis. Probably start at 1/2... maybe 2/4.

Edit: Might also take a 4-tabling 6M stab at it. (I have less 6M experience so I can probably start as low as .50/1 and still be within the rules.)

Re: 15BB Challenge to the Micros

heh you could rename this thread "Degen for a day!"

Nice idea. No dancing around in the kiddy pool here. I can definitely see some value in developing my risk tolerance wrt BR. So far I'm kind of a pansy.

Any swings encountered at each new level have been a bit of a shock. Since moving up to .15/.30 I did have one -50BB swing and two in the other direction... and even though i could probably find that in my couch (on a good day) it has taken some time to adjust to.

I may do this on PP starting at .1/.2 and try to move up to .5/1... (yeah BR nit, i know).

Re: 15BB Challenge to the Micros

One question for clarification, Doug? I've been playing both 1/2 6max and fr.

Can you do one in both? Can you do it as many times as you want?

I assume you can.

Doc

Edit: That was more than one question.

One tabling? Only if you like. Play 4 tables of 200/400, 19 tables of 1/2 FR, and do the challenge at 5/T 6m, if you want. Do multiple challenges at the same time. Embrace variance. The spirit of the challenge is to parlay a 15BB investment into some play at limits where you are uncomfortable.

Play any style any time you like. For the fun of the peanut gallery, just let us know each time you start. I'm looking forward to the odd "OMG!! I'm now at 10/20" post.

I'm just throwing $10 to the forum to encourage people to go for it, and I hope even a modest prize will get people fired up. If the prize goes to someone for whom the money is helpful, all the better. If anyone sees someone like Leo Doc up at 100/200 on a challenge, please AIM or Skype me.

Re: 15BB Challenge to the Micros

What if you get interrupted in the middle? Do you have to start over or can you write down what your stack is and at what level and continue it later?

Timing doesn't matter. If you run good, it could take hours.

fwiw, the original OIC included a 3-hour time-limit, and specified FR. There is also historically some dispute as to whether you can drop down limits at all, and if you can under what circumstances.

I'll hit this up. It'll be a good change of pace and maybe a way to shake the runbad.

Re: 15BB Challenge to the Micros

I've not played in a while, and my bankrolls are at low tide, so I'll give a go. Starting at .25/.50, 6-max. Just doing 1 table for now.

Edit: Challenge called on account of taking wife to dinner... I made it to .50/1 tho. bbl to continue.
