So last night I went to the hospital for alcohol poisoning. I drank a bottle and a half of Rumple Minz at a party, went home, passed out in my living room and threw up all over myself, prompting my girlfriend to think I was going to choke on my vomit and call 911. They gave me an IV and took some blood work and all that stuff. What is really bothersome is that they said I have liver troubles. I'm 22. My parents came to the hospital, and let my girlfriend and I stay on their couch till morning.

The most problematic thing about last night to me is how relatively normal everything up to going to the hospital was. For the past almost two years, passing out in my own vomit has happened about once every two months on average. If my girlfriend hadn't called the ambulance, I probably would have just stayed in my vomit till morning and called it "another one of those nights."

So I've decided to give up alcohol and nip it in the bud now before it becomes even more ingrained in my habits. My family has a history of alcoholism, and I definitely shouldn't carry on like this. I haven't decided what steps I'm going to take, so I thought I'd ask for some ideas. Has anyone else given up alcohol early on in their lives and been successful?

Here's a video of my on my parents' couch after coming home from the hospital in some ballin hospital pants.

Well good luck and all that but this seems like one of those "I got unlucky one too many times so I'm quitting poker" stories.

How long do you actually plan to stay off alcohol? 50 years?

Alcoholism runs on both sides of my families and I haven't "quit" alcohol, but I seldom drink. I consider myself an anomaly though, as I almost never crave it and don't don't like to be very drunk at all.

I dunno, I just have a lot of fun being sober. Consider finding hobbies that aren't alcohol-centric.

I can't think of too many positives about alcohol in my life even when consumed in moderation. I'm highly sociable without it, and I don't even like the feeling of being drunk much. So I'm fine without it. What I foresee as a weak point is peer pressure. When I go out, it's usually with the intent of drinking one or two drinks, but with even very slight pressure I go into blackout drinking mode. I drink in those situations not because I want to drink but because I want to make people happy, and I think drinking will do that.

My father has fairly recently given up alcohol and is in AA.

Good luck, and LFS has started a thread titled quitting alcohol (I think that's the title), which may be of use to you.

I'm going on 2 1/2 years sober and it's been a positive change in my life. It's tough though and I think it's important to find out what your triggers are.

Didn't you start a thread about working out recently? If so throw yourself into that a little imo. Not drinking and working out is a good combo.

Find new friends. Also, you say peer pressure is what causes you to drink until black out. Thats either true or not true. Because an alcoholic doesnt need peer pressure to drink into oblivion.
You are only 22 and showing serious signs of alcoholism so stopping is paramount if you want to live. Liver problems? Waking up in your own vomit? Mate, you do realise that people younger then yourself die daily around the world from drinking the way you do? TIME TO STOP FOR SURE.
You said it yourself that you are very sociable without drink. Live for an alcoholic can be amazing when living a happy and sober life.
I dont know much about your lifestyle but if its one of socialising in clubs and pubs then you need to stop going to those places and find new locations and hobbies to do.
Im sober 1 year on the 17th of April. I had to go into a rehab for 3 months. Best thing I ever did. But the reality is scary.
5 people I met in there have since died from health complications and two others commit suicide. Not to mention the vast majority of others have relapsed.
Alcoholism is a deadly disease and the next drink could be the one that kills us or at least, ruins us.
Good luck. Hope you stay sober.

In my experience it's easier not to drink at all than go the just one or two drinks route. Explain your medical issues to your friends and if they're any good they will encourage you rather then try to buy you drinks.

Its amazing that so many people willingly drink poison to the point they pass out and vomit. I don't mean that to be a positive or negative statement, just rather an observation.

Tell your friends about your liver troubles, about the history of alcoholism in your family and how this is a slippery slope for you. If they don't get it because they're 20 y/o ****heads, get new friends.

Rumple Mintz. Jesus Christ. It's always a tragedy when we lose our young people to alcoholism before they are old enough to try a decent whiskey.

WuTang good luck on your goal of sobriety recognizing such a problem and dealing with it at your age is awesome, I'm 31 and 4 months in to my own quest for sobriety.

A.A here in Philadelphia is very vibrant, there are meeting groups all over the city from 6am-midnight. I find conversing with people who share my problem on a regular basis to be very beneficial, meeting people who were deeply alcoholic talk about how they have stayed sober for decades is very reassuring most of them are fairly well adjusted to life without alcohol.

The best part about A.A for me is the opportunity to help others who struggle with alcoholism.

the problem is not that you drink alcohol, the problem is drinking with no control (mostly not knowing when the über-drunk line is crossed). i kinda have the same problem

WuTang, strongly consider a 12 step rogram or, at the very least, some kind of support group. Going it alone, especially w/ your and your family's history, is not likely to succeed.

Can almost guarantee the, "I'll just have one or two drinks!" route is not gonna work for you.
