Why is the "possibility" of extraterrestrial life even debated anymore?

Yes, there is no proof of extraterrestrials yet, (at least none shown to the public). However when considering the enormous vastness of outer space, it is simply illogical and ridiculous to not believe that there has to be other life out there.

The Earth is not as special people seem to think. For the most part humans have a totally ego-centric attitude about this topic. Throughout history there are stories about many cultures claiming that "Gods" descended from the heavens and shared knowledge/technology with them etc.

There have been UFO sightings reported through mans history. All kinds of testimonies from credible people of actual close encounters of the 4th kind. Theres just no way every single one of them could be a lie.

I beleve we have been visited by EBE's and that the governments of the world have covered it all up for several decades.

To believe that this is the only planet in the universe capable of supporting "intelligent" life is just ludicrous. So why do a lot of people still balk at the idea? Ignorance? Is there some kind of human need to have to see something firsthand in order to believe in it?

I really don't understand the skepticism and have felt this way about this topic since I was 12 years old.

I know a lot of people who are very skeptical. I say 100% that they exist. A lot of people still debate this.

I'm with you so far. It's a billion-to-one shot that a planet would form at just the right distance from just the right-sized star to sustain life, but the universe is a living sample size of endless billions, so it's reasonable to think our planet is one of those billion-to-one shots, and that billion-to-one shots are coming in every day...somewhere....out there...

Yeah, I was with you until that part, OP. Life is probably out there but space is kinda big. No one anywhere has probably figured out how to move faster than the speed of light, and if they can't, it makes them coming here virtually impossible.

Been reading lots about this stuff lately and I thought this gave some interesting perspective. The Voyager 1 is traveling at about 38,000mph and it left Earth almost 35 years ago. During that time it's traveled 16 light hours.

Quote:
At this velocity, 73,600 years would pass before reaching the nearest star, Proxima Centauri, were the spacecraft traveling in the direction of that star. Voyager 1 will need about 14,000 years at its current velocity to travel one light year, therefore 40,000 years will pass before coming anywhere near other stars or planets.

haven't all of these other civilizations had billions of years to find us and announce their presence to more than just a few people?

I think if its possible it has been discovered somewhere. There is no reason to believe that there isnt(or was nt) a civilization out there that has millions or even billions of years of technological advancement ahead of us. I doubt it so, as faster as light travel implies that time traveling is possible.

Also interesting is that we've only been emitting radio waves for a little over a hundred years now. So only aliens within a 100 lightyears could "easily" know of our existence. Since we pretty much only emit digital stuff now it gets even harder to discover us.

Of course that is nothing compared to the distant future when the universe expands so fast that the light of other galaxys doesn't reach us anymore and it will look, for every of the countless galaxys, like they are alone in the universe.

In short, I believe there are aliens out there, but we will never even communicate with them.

Yeah I guess aliens with the technology to visit us would have better things to do then molesting rednecks in the midwest.
