Someone buying a 2L coke is not buying for immediate consumption. They have more time to compare prices (they can wait until they buy groceries, rather than buying at a 7-11 if the price is too high).

People will buy the 1L over the 2L because they don't need that much, and it's worth 40 cents to not carry around a huge jug of Coke.
As someone who works for Coca-Cola (in Australia btw) .. this is the reason why.

Re: Why does the 1 Liter bottle of Coke cost more than the 2 liter bottle?

Some people cite 2L going flat as a reason for its cheaper price. I think this has something to do with it in a behavioural economics (read: irrational) sense. A decent number of people have an aversion to "wasting" things. This is reasonable if you're saving money by doing so, but not so much if you're paying for the privilege. (Yes, if it's a big hassle to pour the Coke down the drain, no if it's merely a psychological aversion).

As an aside, am I the only person here who mixes flat Coke with fresh Coke? Maybe it's me being irrationally cheap, but I don't think so. All I want is moderate carbonation and that does the job.

Seems irrationally cheap unless you're quite poor or drinking a crap load of coke.

I think flat Coke still tastes pretty good.

Re: Why does the 1 Liter bottle of Coke cost more than the 2 liter bottle?

Was just in the supermarket.

Where I live:

Coke bottles:

500ml 1.05
1.5L: 1.50
2L: 1.80

1L bottles either don't exist here or are not for sale in either Asda or Tesco.

1L bottle for immediate consumption though? How much coke do you friggin need cold in the fridge to drink right away? LOL America.
