The Queen is probably more recognizable than I first thought. Her being around for so long means there are probably tons of old people who would recognize her.

That said, I still think it's Obama by a large margin due to Asian countries.

The Pope is the office - the man himself isn't particularly recognizable.

It isn't that he isn't notable. It's that everyone who would know him would also know the Pope and the Queen. The edge is in people who know only one or two of the three, and among those people Obama loses.

It's preposterous to think that the number of people who know Obama but not the Queen of England is greater than the number of people who know the Queen of England but not Obama.

The "rare exception" is what matters here, since we're trying to pick the ONE most famous person in the world, while speculating over a few people who might qualify for the title. But people like Lebron James, Kobe Bryant etc are very well known in Europe and China, and those account for a heavy part of the population.
