It isn't a stretch to say this was important news in China. You expect me to think the Chinese they took no interest at all in Hong Kong and have no idea who the Queen is but for some reason really care who Obama is?

No I'm really not particularly American-centric. I think you're just way off and have a bad feel for the relative recognizability of The Queen.

I am, btw, picturing a situation where you put a bunch of photos down of famous people's faces. And you ask people to ID the pictures. Queen loses on a global basis today.

I'm sure most Indians are aware of the existence of the Queen, and of England, the country that lorded over them as a colony.

That's different from seeing a photo of an old white lady today and going "oh yea, Queen of England, that's her right there."

I can't believe people think the queen of england is more recognizable than Obama. I just texted my dad who does lots of business in China, was born in HK, and has also lived in England and obviously the U.S. this question. He says that it's not even close and Obama wins in a landslide. Sample size one but I trust that he'd have a better grasp on the asian continent than I would so I defer to him.

No one is saying that Obama is an obscure figure. The argument is that everyone who knows him also knows the Queen of England. (And how did the Pope get dropped?)

Those people don't matter for the purposes of this discussion.

The question is whether there are people who know only Obama, and whether there are people who know only the Queen. For the reasons I've given (geopolitical history and endurance of reign), the number of people who know the Queen is larger, because the first group can really only be Americans.

I think Celine Dion is up there. she's very well known in china (and the rest of asia). I was walking the kathmandu trial in nepal and heard her record playing in a tiny hillside village. pretty amazing. She's obviously very well known in NA. i would guess europe and SA to be similar. Have not been to africa.

my point was obama's been president for 4 years and the queen has reigned for 60 years. It wasn't a shot at bush, but I can see how you would think that since most of the discussion so far itt has been about him

So you guys think if we put a lineup of 5 people's mugshots consisting of obama, QE2, pope, GWB, MJ and asked random people in the world who are these people someone other obama would be the most known. WAT. Or does it count if the person says oh that face looks familiar because then I guess with all the coins/money shes been printed on maybe Queen has a shot?

Guys its obama in a landslide and if someone can figure out a way to prop bet this I will put up a lot of money on obama, the most powerful man in the world, over the ****in queen of england
