Who the hell starts dying at 30?
IŽll start us of with half a quote:
"... talk to no ordinary man over forty. A man without a heroic bent starts dying at the age of thirty." - N. N. Taleb
Personally im 28, and I just cant see it. What scares me, though, is I see it around me. People saying they are old. Behaving like they are old. Even at my age - even younger then me. People even act like they are physicaly weaker, not beeing 25 anymore. And I dont get it. Im only going uppwards, in every aspect, and it really doesnt look like its going to slow down in a good while.
So all you, as Taleb put it, "ordinary" guys, why do you start dying at the age of 30? Because its certainly not your physical body thats dying. Or do none of you even think you do? That might scare me even more.
______________
I have a theory - applicable for atleast some people - that I hope wont piss anyone of:
Im trying to look back to high school etc, and I realize most people didnt really have what the media wanted them to have: a lot of hot girls, good grades, and a lot of fun. A lot of people probably grew up feeling like nerds or atleast unsuccessful. Are those now the people wanting us all to slow the f- down? Comforting, a bit like "hey, thats over, we are all old now and dont care about those things."

Re: Who the hell starts dying at 30?
It's pretty much all in the individual's head. I know people in their early 30s who act like they're 60 and have no sense of adventure and won't do anything fun, on the other hand I have a cousin who is ~44 who is single, dates hot chicks in their 20s, and parties harder than most college guys.
I'm 28 as well and feel the same way you do. I have no clue what the fuss is over turning 30, it's just a number to me and I don't feel like my happy-go-lucky outlook on life will change one iota just b/c the first digit in my age changes from a 2 to a 3.
I think another factor could be whether you tend to be a conformist or non-conformist. I have a huge independent streak, growing up I supported different sports teams than the rest of my friends/family b/c I wanted a team of my own, I've moved far, far away from my hometown and not felt one iota of home-sickness. I think there's a lot of pressure (at least where I'm from) to live life according to one acceptable template, but I've never really given in to that pressure and I think I enjoy life more a result.
I think maybe this idea ties into your last paragraph in that a lot of society feels like they didn't get the most out of life or haven't lived life to the fullest, so they apply pressure to those who live outside the box to start conforming, possibly b/c they have a jealousy deep-down inside.

Re: Who the hell starts dying at 30?
If people act like they are dying in their 30's thats pretty sad. I just turned the big 30 and I dont notice any difference at all not even from my early 20's. I hear people bitch all the time that think they cant drink like they used too once they hit 30. Again that's bs imo. I get trashed all the time and Im a happy campy and I dont heal from my benders any slower than before.
I just started working out with weights again and I havent touched the things in years. Im not having any harder of a time from before when I took long breaks.
If my fiance isnt around for a few days I still jerk off 3 times a day. Im still young..atleast for a few more years
I think you start noticing changes in your 40's.

Yo, alcoholics don't get hangovers at any age, and they party it up like they're 23 again. Might be worth looking into.

You set up a ludicrous premise and then attack it. There's probably a name for that.

It's all about your own mental state.
I know people in the 50s that are still living like they are 20. And I plan to be that guy too if I live long enough to see 50. That is the real question.

Ummm yes they do. That is exactly why they have to keep drinking. Do your homework / drink for a week and see for yourself.

So you're asserting that alcohol withdrawal is a hangover? You've never known guys that drink a fifth every night and are up 6 hours later working their jobs with no issue and no booze?

Nope. IIRC 1% of the population does not even get a hangover/alcohol withdrawal, maybe that guy is one of them. 0.7l of any hard liquor is not very much...

Sure, to anyone normal that sounds "a lot" but you were talking about alcoholics.
Guns N Roses bassist:
"At his worst, he says he was drinking "a gallon of vodka a day", and then 10 bottles of wine a day "when I was trying to taper down". "

or before we are born if we are unlucky enough to belong to a godless heathen who heads to the planned parenthood as soon as the stick turns the wrong colour.
