I've been wearing jeans my whole life. I'm 23. I wear alot of button-down shirts but I wear them untucked.

Lately I've been wanting to get some black pants. Like dress-pants or whatever. I've never done this.

I'm thinking of getting something like this:


I've never bought pants like this before. I wear old-navy extra loose jeans (same pair like every day for a couple weeks, then wash) and love the comfort of them.

Couple of notes:
- I hate it when pants are too short. As a result the bottoms of my jeans get quite worn. Obviously I can't let that happen to nice pants.

- I hate pants that are tight around the ankles. I have big feet so I like my pants to cover a decent portion of my shoes.

- I don't have 'business' type shoes, just plain black merrels.

- I'm pretty poor so I don't want to spend $50+ on a pair of pants.

- I like black... don't want gray or khaki, but I have a lot of dark shirts.. can I wear black shirts and black pants or am I gonna look like a tool?

EDIT: How I buy pants, a four-part process -

1) Walk to store.
2) Pick out some pants I like.
3) Try them on.
4) Purchase them with money.

That's crazy talk. I just walk around yelling "GIVE ME PANTS I NEED SOME PANTS GIVE ME SOME PANTS" until somebody gives me pants.

OP everyone's gonna give you a hard time for your "how do I buy pants" line but I just want to commend you for stepping up your fashion from kid to adult

Also it seems like you know exactly how you want your pants to fit. just go to a store and if they fit the way you want them too buy them.

You can usually get nice black pants for cheaper at a place like tj maxx.

all i know is that if your legs are wider than pencils, don't attempt to purchase pants at express.

Yeah I actually plan on going to TJ Maxx after work today but wanted some advice first.

I have chicken legs which is probably one reason I usually opt for a loose fit.

more questions:

Will I need to buy an ironing board? I've never ironed anything.

Can I throw this type of pants in the washer? I don't want to have to start dry-cleaning ****

Make sure there's enough room in the crotch. While you're trying them on, walk around a bit. Make sure to sit down and see if the zipper pitches a boner tent. You may or may not prefer a boner tent.

You're going to have to buy a nice black belt. Not the karate type. If you buy these pants, you'll also have to buy nice black shoes and some collared shirts. Possibly some ties, and new dress socks of course. This is a big investment.

Agree about the shoes, though, not dress shoes, casual or business casual would see right to me. Belt and socks, agreed.
