Right, this. And as stated by OP, they seem to have money and live in a city, which would also suggest a greater likelihood of being readers.

Re: What are your answers to these two logic/reasoning/personality question
Adults who read illustrated books (or watch children's TV shows) are statistically more likely to be drinkers, because those activities are subversions of adulthood, and such subverters are less likely to be nits.
The names John, Mary, and Helen would ordinarily ground this family in the early 20th century:
But the business suit detail places it post-feminist revolution.
So I'd say D.

Seriously, what is this supposed to measure? Maybe ask about some real world skills.
Was another question "What kind of animal would you be?"

Re: What are your answers to these two logic/reasoning/personality question
clare quality makes a good point and if I could do it again, I think that there is more eveidence to suggest the best answers are D,A rather than D,C
many people would say that they clearly encourage drinking since they bought it for him. I disagree with that notion

other questions were 4 questions and put them in order to which is most like me to the least like me.
There were also analogies.

Re: What are your answers to these two logic/reasoning/personality question
I think there are a lot of red herrings.
While the fact that they bought a book may lead us to think it is likely they read more than others, we can't make that conclusion from the limited information we have.
The fact that it is an illustrated book is designed to make you think "oh, they like picture books because they don't like to read," but that's just speculation, and as others have said, "illustrated book" can be a lot of things.
A high rise building could mean they have more income/are more educated than average, or it could be
On another forum where this was posted, someone thought "admired" meant they really liked their gifts, ergo they must really like alcohol and encourage its drinking.

Re: What are your answers to these two logic/reasoning/personality question
You should have told them that the Hazlitt's live next door and you know them to be illiterate teetotalers. Your answers, therefore, are A and C.
Bonus: Show your work.
John's boss would have fired him if he didn't bring back the scotch. Mary can only "read" illustrated books.

Re: What are your answers to these two logic/reasoning/personality question
It's a poorly worded question. I think the answers are not mutually exclusive, and that it's both "most likely" we can't tell anything from that limited information; and also that it's "most likely" they read more than others.

Re: What are your answers to these two logic/reasoning/personality question
Since there aren't any right or wrong answers here, I guess this is about the way a person approaches the question? For instance, it's obviously not wrong to say D,D--I would assume this response would more typical of a left-brained math-oriented person.

You are both over and under-thinking this. Those are not "red herrings" - you are supposed to interpret the probabilities, that is why this is a reasoning test. People don't buy "illustated" books while traveling because they don't like to read. People who don't like to read don't buy books at all.
There is a huge gap between "discouraging" and "encouraging" drinking. You would not know that from this web forum of course, but a lot of people fall in that gap.

Bolded is key imo. No matter what the writer of this test intended to be the "correct" answers, any conclusions we make are based at least in part on speculation and horribly incomplete information. D and D seem correct for this reason.

A picture book they bought on vacation? Can easily be a coffee table book/show off "look where we went" type book. D, D imo

You are not expected to come to a definitive "conclusion," only the most likely answer. Mind you, around 50% of all people read more then average, you do not need much information to reason that someone is "more likely" to fall in that group.
