I listen to mainly comedy podcasts most of which have been mentioned.

One I haven't seen mentioned is bertcast which is bert kreischers podcast. Consistently funny.

The Brian McCarthy Interview show
Definitely one where listener discretion is advised. You may have heard him on Jim and Eddie talking sht. Very degenerate, nasty but funny stories. Not for everyone though....

Thank-you to whoever recommended The Complete Guild to Everything. I love the two hosts.

i'll second a lot of the podcasts here:

wtf with marc maron - the best
bill burr - hilarious, especially if you are a sports fan

ones i dont think have been mentioned.

RISK! - storytelling podcast similar to the moth although many stories deal with very NSFW sex stories. lots of LBGT stuff. the host, Kevin Allison is gay and really into kink.

Fresh Air from NPR - yeah this show is and old standard, but Teri Gross is the best. She can hang with anyone from Sandra Day O'Connor to Andy Samberg and the Lonely Island. Teri seems to know about everything.

Q the podcast from CBC. various arts and culture show with Gian Gomeshi. I'm not Canadian, but usually the subjects are relevant to Americans unless they are talking about Canadian politics. Usually three 15-20 minute interviews with various writers, musicians, critics, politicians etc. Occasionally they have live music.

Planet Money from NPR: Sounds boring, but it's really much in the style of This American Life. I would say this show is about money and the economy much in the same way Radiolab is about science. Also the show is usually only 20 - 30 minutes.

Some new (to me) podcasts worth listening to:

VICE Media Podcast (independent news/politics show)
The Partially Examined Life (philosophy)
Cognitive Dissonance (skepticism)
My History Can Beat Up Your Politics (using history to explain politics today)

This American Life is No #1 IMO
Radiolab is good if you can get over the fake incredulity.

Bill Burr and Jordan Jesse Go are two "conversational" podcasts I like. I like them but they're not essential. I listen to them when doing chores and boring stuff. They're kind of on the opposite ends of the spectrum.

One that hasn't been recommended in this thread: The memory palace. It takes events from history and presents them as if they're short compelling stories. This is wonderful, however it is released quite slowly.

Dead podcasts PT 1: You look nice today. Three guys shooting the ****. Worth listening to the first half at least.

Dead podcasts PT 2: Talking **** with Jim Jeffries and Eddie Ifft. This is worth listening from the beginning up into Jim Jeffries leaves. Eddie Ifft is horrible, but JJ makes up for it. Unfortunately the old archives aren't up on itunes so you'll have to google like mad or PM someone.

Semi derail, I'm big into This American Life, but there are now 500 episodes and if I want to go back into the archives, I feel like picking them is a total shot in the dark, considering sometimes the theme doesn't have too much to do with the actual stories sometime.

So what are some of your favorite ones?

Off the top of my head I loved 246, My Pen Pal. Also I enjoyed the Harper High School double episode. Just read that a 17 year old boy from Harper was killed on Friday. The first homicide since they produced their show.

New hardcore history ep arrived last weekend. Felt like ****ing Christmas. It. Is. Phenomenal. I was damn near moved to tears a few times in the last 45 minutes.

It's hard to pick a favorite but it always amazes me to see Orgin Story never makes the favorites list. IMO Act II is the most significant piece of investigative journalism TAL has ever done and Act III is probably the funniest segment ever.

Thx for that recommendation. Sounds right up my alley.

You hear that WTF ep recently where Maron had Open Mike Eagle on? Was such a weird pairing, but they had a good rapport.

Just listened to it yesterday (don't usually listen to WTF because 1- I can never get past the 15 minutes of blathering to himself at the start, I can't listen to anybody talk to themselves for that long 2- Just don't really feel Maron's personality at all).

I'm friends with Mike, so that was very cool to see happen. It was good, but I wish they'd had another hour to talk. They only got to the surface level of a lot of stuff.

The ones mentioned are excellent, but my favorite is Return to the Scene of the Crime. It has Mike Birbiglia (who is awesome), and Dan Savage's bit about his mom dying is one of the most moving things I've ever heard.

I like Maron with guests, but haven't listened to his intros since the first time I mistakenly did so. Just skip to around 12 minutes and fast forward until the guest comes on.

A partial list is included. They even talked to Don Johnson, the guy who took Caesar's for millions in BJ.

Yeti,

I'm not much of a battle rap guy at all, the podcast I mentioned is with a dude who films the Grind Time videos and is more about the behind the scenes stuff/history of how Grind Time happened. That said- this is my favorite one. If nothing else it gives you a good idea of what these battles are like.

i see. i am a big battle rap fan (mainly king of the dot and don't flop, haven't watched a ton of grindtime). i just wanted someone more knowledgeable than me to pull the trigger and make a sweet thread where we could discuss our favourite bars!

derail over, sry

I'm a huge wtf fan and have probably listened to the intros on the first 200 or so episodes. I'm similar to maron in that I'm angry/frustrated/annoyed a lot of the time, so used to find his intros interesting to listen to. Now I usually just skip straight to the interviews though.

I do like the intros/emails/etc on the live shows though. And Eddie f'king Peppitone. And for god's sake maron, stop having jim earl or whatever the fk his name is on your live shows!! He is not funny.

I just like underground hip hop a lot, not huge into battle rap/freestyles/etc. Was watching some old scribble jam vids on youtube the other day. Gets kinda old after awhile. Eyedea, Brother Ali, Sage Francis were some GOAT's back in the scribble jam days. Surprised Ali never won at scribble jam. Think he lost to Sage in the one I watched. Ali was just so money when it came to riding a beat and had some killer rhymes.

A battle rap thread where posters battled each other would be sorta cool I guess. Only thing is it wouldn't be like battle rap bc it'd all be scripted and not freestyle (yes, I'm aware that batyle raps/freestyles are often partly scripted/pre-written, but you can tell when a guy is truly coming up with something off the top of his head vs having something already written).

Anyways, I'm a half Caucasian/half Asian male from the midwest. I wouldn't have anything in common with battle rappers/freestylers..............oh, wait...................

You know dumbfoundead, alpha mc, verBS or any other swim team member? Started watching some knocksteady tv clips on youtube and was really impressed with the swim team, both collectively and individually.

Industry Standard with Barry Katz (big time agent) is awesome if you are at all interested in the inner workings of Hollywood.

Movie Geeks United is great for movie news and film buffery (especially Indie releases and film festivals). Has a lot of great interviews with big names too.

I used to listen to the Atheist Experience, the Thinking Atheist and the Non-Prophets podcasts when I was into that sort of scene, but I've drifted away from it (would recommend Non-Prophets though). I still listen to Point of Inquiry though, it's less new-atheist and more rationalist/science-based/progressive.

Poker-wise I only listen to the pokercast, the other stuff is usually either too gimmicky or too infrequent.

The BBC has a few good podcasts but usually I find a good episode rather than a specific series.

Def will check this out, because he was a great guest on Jay Mohr's podcast. Mohr making fun of Katz is my favorite part of Mohr's routine.

Sounds good. Heard his name mentioned on wtf w marc maron several times. Think he's represented a lot of big name comics.

I started listening to this podcast when I saw it mentioned here. Couldn't listen to the 12 episodes fast enough...polished them off in a couple of days and then went cold turkey.

Come back Norm!
