I remember cars that had reverse threaded lugs on one side.

And then we got a new post doc. The dude was instructed that he mustn't let the system get to the room temperature. He has to ensure that it is cooled every time with fluid helium. And what is he doing.... He allows the system get to the room temperature. This handler was through the expansion completely glued to the pipe. It all become basically one. Pouring amounts of fluid helium on it didn't help, trying to pull it out with a motor didn't work, nothing worked. The floor in the building had to be destroyed and the whole system had to be dug out. Costs approximately 1 million.

For future reference, the penetrating oil you want is PB Parts Blaster. Spray some in there, wait overnight (a few hours if you're in a hurry) and off it comes. Lucky this thread wasn't a lot more exciting because the usual sequence of events is drenching with WD40 then a fire caused by heating the excess WD40 with a candle or torch.

I had a good example of thermal expansion with my old Fiat. It had an aluminum oil pan with an iron drain plug. In typical Fiat fashion the drain plug needed an Allen wrench, notorious for stripping out. Sure enough when I had to change my oil, and warmed up the engine so the oil would drain properly, the drain plug is tight as can be. I put an ice cube against the drain plug for 5 seconds and it came right out.

For further future reference, the penetrating oil you want is diesel. Nothing comes close. Soak over night and it will penetrate 100 year old rust.

At 18 or 19 I had a 1969 Dodge Van as my very first car. Having got a flat, I proceeded to break off 2 of the lugs on the driver's side rear tire. It cost me the princely sum of $3 each to have new lugs pressed into my drum at the auto parts store.

Many older Dodges had left handed threads on the driver's side of the vehicle.
