oh yeah....I'm glad so many people like this thread. I've been hesitant to do it, not because I'm shy about it, but because of the way it would change perceptions of me.
Since many of you have gotten alot out of the thread, I'm happy I finally did it.
I can honestly say that if anything, this raises my opinion of you. Furthermore, I look forward to watching you extract your revenge on Dom next year.

PS --- I'll pass you the the shiv when he isn't looking

haha...prison jokes

My Turn,
Awesome post.

Will California ever get out of prison?

If he does, would you know about it?

Would he even remember you?

When you were in solitary, how often did a guard check on you?

Did you ever talk to one on a personal level or was it all gaurd/prisoner talk?

I am glad that you lived through it.

Did you get your CPA or does your criminal record preclude it?

I would agree that the drug laws are messed up.

yes, and no. I know it. He's still in there. I find it best to withold that piece of information.
Cool. I respect that. Do you still worry about some form of retribution from him or do you mostly figure that he has enough enemies not to spend time worrying about you?

Great thread man.

I wonder what this guy was thinking as he drove to Chicago.

I'd be like #145,378 of his top list of people he held a grudge against. I was just a run of the mill affair for this guy. Almost a weekly basis thing.

every 4 hours or so, they did a visual check through the door window.

a few times I talked personal level with guys who supervised outside grounds. We weren't really threats, so they could let their guard down a bit.

I grew up about 10 miles from Ina. Actually attended junior college right across I-57.

Is Ina populated by mostly 'punks' or is it just the place where the punks are sent, along with other inmates? As in, if you're a punk you go to Ina, but being in Ina doesn't necessarily mean you're a punk?

I have an irrational fear about him. Plus, I'm worried about what I can say publicly and not.

I highly doubt he has spent one minute of the last 5 years devoted to thinking about me at all. I'm very small beans in his grand scheme of things.

I am inelgible to be a CPA due solely to my criminal record. If I ever get cleared, the first thing I plan on doing is completing the CPA.

"if you're a punk you go to Ina, but being in Ina doesn't necessarily mean you're a punk" is the answer

It is an odd juxtaposition that on one side of I-57 is a junior college and on the other is a prison.

It's also odd that Big Muddy is the exact same design as Galesburg/East Moline/Danville.

I for one, am outraged by this (and I am a CPA). CPA licenses are given by each state. I haven't done a search, but does a felony conviction eliminate you from every state?

I got my license in FL and now live in PA. I keep my license active in Florida because it is easier than transferring it and all the states have reciprocity anyway.

They tend to do that because they don't want accountants with past drug or financial problems handling lots of people's money. Too bad that's the case here, though. GL with the pardon, OP.

I agree that convicted felons should be more thoroughly screened, but an outright ban seems a bit harsh. CPA firms are hiring white collar criminals as consultants to help them provide services to client s who suspect fraud, so it's a bit hypocritical to not a mechanism whereby a felon may receive a license.

There are plenty of CPAs in jail who weren't felons when they passed the exam.

I just ate nutty buddies outside of the cafeteria, so I don't know all the concotions. I remember being amazed at how ingenius the inmates were given all day to solve issues.
So you told us what it meant if you found a "honey bun" on your pillow, I don't think I would want to walk in and see a "nutty buddy"

There are plenty of worse injustices than that concerning ex-cons man.

Anyway, anyone who wants to check out the last drug/prison story can see here. More about addiction than jail, though, but very informative also.

Are you completely incapable of making a post anymore without some sort of BBV-ism in it?

Anyway, Chump Change's thread here about questionable detainment and otherwise getting screwed over by The Man and spending time in jail is also an excellent (if infuriating) read. Someone else can link Karpinksi's, who even knows if it's true.

I know three guys who went to prison, they are all fairly normal guys who just had a bit of larceny in them. They all did time in minimum security facilities, and I have to say that each one, at the end of his stretch, just looked great. It's actually hard to believe but all three claimed, and I tend to agree, that they were never healthier in their lives prior to prison. They got regular food, regular exercise, and regular sleep. They also lived a life that was almost stress-free, without worries about things like jobs, businesses, rent, car payments, and so forth.

I'm sure it's different for guys in the max security prisons, but each one of them were quite confident that the time they spent in did nothing but good things for them health wise. OP, what do you think about that?

Great TR, I've really enjoyed reading it. I went through something similar when I was in College. Screwed up kid in over his head with drugs. Thankfully I didn't have anyone try to use my case to advance their career, and I recieved a conditional discharge (less than probabtion, a literal slap on the wrist) since it was a first offence and not violent at all. They did make me plea to a felony level possession though. Its been over 10 years and I haven't been in any trouble since, and I just got a job at a large (listed in the S&P 500) Company. Don't think that the felony makes that impossible.

It sucks terrifically hugely, but I can see organizations doing this, kind of a "professional standards" thingy. While it doesn't do anything to really guarantee honesty, at least it covers up the org/license from being questioned and keeps it more, er, unassailable as a high standard. Unfortunately, it automatically means no one can ever be assumed to have reformed.

However, how would we feel if doctors could get reinstated for major blunders?

I'm not 100% comfortable with either letting people regain or letting them lose their certification/potential licensing.

You said in a previous thread that you would flee rather then do more then 1 year of jail time. So given that how much time knowing what you know would you be willing to do rather then flee;

In a max security prison?

In a min security prison?

Interesting question. Sounds like the OP's time in a max security prison led to so much tension over potential violence that it would probably age almost anyone, especially someone a little older or not in great health coming in. I could see getting gray hairs and your body clock somehow accelerating from the massive stress and the resulting strain on your whole body as well as mind. I wonder how many prisoners feel like they have lost a ton of physical health/well-being in prison.

Well, if he would have swindled peopel out of their money or violated some SEC provisions on selling stock or insider trading then sure either revoke his license or make him ineligible.

That would be the equivalent to your doctor example.

A drug offense is hardly the same type of infraction and an employer could easily require random drug testing.
