"Ban Tipping"

EDIT: and now I see it was an American who wrote it. Still worth it for the below the line comments, like a guy who tipped 5% on a NYC cab ride. Sheesh.
****ing cheap pommies not tipping. FFS no excuse for the poms not to tip especially in London - stagnant wage growth already at a low rate plus high cost of living. American servers have it better with their lower cost of living despite their smaller take home pay IMO (arguable that it is lower as well).

The cost of the meal is $x per person plus 9.5% tax and an 18% service charge. We moved to a service charge model because the current tip law does not allow our culinary team, who serve our guests, to participate in a tip pool. We also want to create a transaction-less dining experience with a single bill.

Received that in the follow up from an online reservation last night. Thought it might be of interest to thread.

18 is for sure the next 15 in most places.

This week I learned the protocol for tipping on takeout you pickup in a restaurant. Actually depends how they have their computers set up. In some instances if you don't tip them, they're still paying out the kitchen on you. In those instances I just give'm up a few bucks so they break even.

How can you tell those instances from others?

I am simply never tipping on a pick up order. Period. The day I start is the day I start tipping at McDonald's also.

Hey, man. If I order a Stone IPA from you and all you do is pop the top off and slide it to me, what's so special about that service? Also, how much of a tip do you expect on that?

Nothing is so special about it. If you said tipping bartenders is an insane idea I would agree. I tip them though, as well as servers when I dine in restaurants. I do this because that's the accepted system and I'm not cheap.

Buck a beer is standard.

also bartenders are working for tips

the cashier at a takeout place is definitely making a normal wage

You realize the difference here is not due to the customer.

Yes it is, you chose to take out instead of getting a table and eating there

You have to understand that there's a difference between some hole in the wall takeout place and getting takeout from a place that is a sit down place. I often get sushi from a sit down place. The waiters bag my food and bring it to the cashier. If I get $25 worth of sushi for takeout, then tipping $2 seems about right for a waiter to bag my meal who is making $2 an hour or whatever. If I go to the Chinese takeout place that doesn't even have any tables to sit at, then I'm not tipping. But if someone who doesn't get paid a real wage does work for me then I'm tipping. Seems like the only reasonable thing to do.

The rule is pretty simple. If the person helping you makes a normal wage then you don't need to tip. If the person helping you makes a waiter's wage then you should tip. The whole McDonalds argument is just silly.

i generally agree w you. carry out i stay around 10%ish. but, for instance i went to this place called rikyu sushi in oakland last night(random--turned out to be quite good imo) bill's 143--toss waitress 2 c-notes. rough! 20%calcs put it at 30..change is -20-20-10/7ish. thought food/service was real good+we got there late. took a 20. left 37ish. if it was crappy i prob would've took the 7 or 10 too depending. i try to keep it fair+/round up, there's also a chance i would've just took the 10 or 7--but that's kinda rare-depends on a few other things. service was good imo but she needed to be reminded a couple times..whatever.

The customer is not responsible for what an employer pays his employees. Last I checked, tips are not mandatory.

I only tip for takeout at places where I'm a regular, and typically it's about 10%.

So do you advocate not tipping for takeout when you're in a state (e.g. the entire west coast) that doesn't have a separate minimum wage for tipped employees?

I have never heard of that. I guess the rule of thumb I would use is if a person's wages primarily come from tips then you should tip them when they do work for you. Does that not seem reasonable?

i mean, if I'm carrying out, I'm just not gonna tip outside of just dropping whatever coined change I get if I pay in cash.

if I go to a pizza place that has sit down tables but order something to pick up, I'm not paying them anything extra for putting the pizza in a box and giving it to me.

tipping is for when I sit down and you need to clean up after me, whether you are serving drinks or anything in a true waiter fashion just will change the amount of tip.
