I've worked as a delivery guy for a Chinese restaurant when I just got my drivers license. I got paid 3.5 euro per hour (lol Chinese people are stingy), but really only took the job bc I wanted to drive around town. I wasn't the only one with these ambitions, bc apparently they had to replace the front tires of that car every year.

That job taught me there are a lot of crazy people out there and a lot of cheap people as well. I remember once delivering a big order for 76 euro on Christmas Eve. They gave me 80e, I gave them 4e back and then they tipped me 1e. I just lolled. This other time I delivered an order for 9.65e, they gave me 10e, I gave 35 cents back in change and then they wanted to give me 5 cents back as a tip. I respectfully declined and walked away chuckling.

Somehow these people fail to realise that what they do is way worse than not tipping at all. But even though I had plenty of opportunities I never tampered with any of the orders or spat in anyones food. Neither did any of the other delivery guys who worked there at that time.

And one of the delivery guys was bat isht crazy, he got in a fight with the owner of the restaurant over something dumb, proceeded to rent a chainsaw, drove to the owners house in his delivery car and chained down a tree in his yard. I don't think the owner ever found out who did it.

So I think you guys might be overestimating the chance of someone spitting in your food. None of my friends who have worked in the food service industry have done anything like that either. Then again, maybe we eurolanders are different. We don't spit in your food, we hunt you down and chain down your trees! Better tip good.

tipping 0.5% if the waiter was rude/slow and watching his face ftw.

Thats the only thing I can add to this discussion.

This thread is entertaining. Yes/No to the following please.

Would you tip:

An event manager who set up your wedding

A magician performing table-to-table in a restaurant

Your gardener

The guy walking around selling drinks during a NFL/baseball match

A public transport bus driver

An interior designer who furnished the rooms in your house

Your insurance salesman

I've only insult tipped twice in my life.

I can say that in both cases it was well deserved and made me feel great.

Well, I got married and we never had an event planner. But I suppose if I wanted to spend that kind of money on my wedding, and she did an exceptional job, I would consider it.

I would probably tell him to **** off, or just skip our table. I also don't give my spare change to every busker on the street. I think the point of tipping is to reward services you actually want.

Once again, I'm not lazy/rich enough to hire a gardener. I suppose however if I was, I would probably tip him during the holidays, I guess that would be more of a bonus, but same dif. Unless you mean landscaper, in which case no.

Most definitely.

Quote:

I drive a car, but I have never tipped a bus driver. I would maybe consider it if I needed to take public transportation on the holidays or something.

Once again, I think I can pick out a paint swatch or 2 myself. I doubt I would tip an interior designer. I assume she would be charging a hefty fee in the first place.

Yeah, since I get the $30 re-imbursed I figure I can go a little deeper. She's good people. If this was all out of my pocket, it would probably be different.

How much for your typical wedding?

Obviously he asks you whether you would want him to perform. Assuming you wanted him to perform and he performed, would you tip? Doesn't have to be a magician, it could even be a band who performs table to table.

Not a chance.

What if he perfectly tailored an insurance plan that suited you and helped you save a lot of money?
Added a bit. I just find it a bit odd that some people only get a tip on their holidays.

My wife and I are fairly unsentimental people, are wedding probably had a total cost of ~$1000 and consisted of 30 family members in my mother in laws backyard. We had already been living together for 7 years at this point, and had the wedding as more of a formality then anything. Also, my wife's Aunt from Portugal was in town, and her Father as well as my grandparents are not in the greatest health.

Ok, in that case, I guess I would be paying him for his services, but yes I would probably give him money.

Isn't this exactly why I'm paying him all that money in the first place?

I think personally, if I ever hired a gardener/cook/maid or w/e, I would be pretty well of (or super lazy) but either way, I would probably be paying them what I thought was an excellent wage already.

Sick brag btw. Big weddings are dumb. Always wanted a wedding like yours.

If your insurance agent accepts tips you should look for another insurance agent. That's against the ethical standards for the industry.

If someone really goes above and beyond and you feel inspired to do something nice for that person, they can accept a restaurant gift certificate for a small amount or something like that. Or baked goods are pretty much always welcome. I've had a couple of clients buy me dinner over the years or bring in small things at Christmas.

But really, if you really appreciate your insurance agent and think they do a stellar job for you, recommend him/her to people you know. That's the best kind of tip, and then your friends and family get a good agent also.

Who's right here?
I would normally tip here, but I think it's a bit of a gray area. Some of these concession places don't want you to tip, or otherwise discourage tipping. If there's a tip jar, it becomes much more obvious what the right move is.

PM if you want more details. But basically we found this nice Justice of the Peace through a friend of a friend, who also had a marriage license Person on staff, they came to our house about 3 weeks before and we filled out all the paperwork. Approx fee ~$400

The total Ceremony was ~5mins, no wedding party, signed the wedding license with our witnesses, then had great BBQ in the backyard with family.

One thing we said before going in was it was we really wanted to limit the number of people, so we decided to make it family only.

/Off Topic.

Excellent point. The same would go for real estate agents.

I have travelled trough most of Europe and I have a home there. First, tipping in Europe is a lot more common than people on here admit. The percentage is likely not as high as in North America but people tip. Second, the service was horrible at a considerably higher rate than bad service in North America.

Just had pizza delivered with two liter soda etc. $18.45, gave $22. I'm sure this would half the people in the thread irate because they either don't tip or think dropping a $20 bill to cover it would be enough.

There is a tip jar. I tip at the "beer only" concession stand but not at the "has everything" concession stand.
