Re: Tipping

if you're only gonna tip once on the valet transaction why wouldn't you tip when you drop it off?

Usually no wait to drop off a car. I don't see a point.

You tip based on how fast they bring the car back or if they even notice you're waiting.

IMO anyways

Re: Tipping

Depends on if you're tipping in order to reward service or to try to get better service.

Also social norms. Why do you tip a waiter at the end of the meal and not the beginning?

Why not tip the waiter half at the beginning and the other half at the end of the meal?

If the server fails to bring enough ranch, then how do you get the first half back?

Yuck. Makes me not want to go there at all. Same thing with Starbucks. (Thanks El Diablo and DarkOne for your responses on that.)

It's a ranch incentive laden tipping program.

pre-tipping is optimal. not sure why almost nobody does it, especially at haircuts.

Bc waiters expect to be tipped at the end
Valets are often tipped on both ends but if I'm gonna just tip on one end it's gonna be to the guy taking my car in the hopes he doesn't **** it up.

1) What % of people do you think tip valets on the front end?
2) What % of people do you think tip valets on the back end?
3) What % of people do you think tip valets on both ends?
(Questions are not exclusive, so the totals can add up to a possible 300%, not 100%.)

My own guesses would be:
1) 25%
2) 90%
3) 20%

$5 on both ends for me. If you can't afford that, park yourself.

I tip a buck for every time the waitress comes over, if I'm at a buffet like that

understandable but id rather go and ask him to fill up my water or just do it myself at a place like that.

if I go to a sit down restaurant, i ll top 20-25%, unless service was bad

If the waiter just let my plates pile up on my table like that I might not tip much either.

If a percentage tip would lead to a tip too small to bother with, maybe the service rendered shouldn't be a tipped service.
Horrible logic. Say someone serves $5.00 items and only gets ten percent in tips. Since an individual decides it's too small to bother with a person who serves $500 a shift should be out $50 a shift?

Yeah employers who pay bonuses should pay up front as well then people can decide if they want to do the work during the year or just YOLO

Sorry, I never came back to this. Short answer, yeah. I just leave a good tip. I guess if someone is really just WOAT level I might tip less than usual but I'm not sitting there constantly adjusting a score in my head. Likewise, if someone does something above and beyond I might give them a little extra on top.

I'm guessing you rate uber drivers a 3 if they just get you where you're going in an unremarkable fashion, 5-stars are only for guys that give free handjobs.

Do you think that micromanaging your tip is going to improve your service?

Re: Tipping

Ive never rated an Uber driver.

At restaurants my standard tip is 20% which i was what I give probably 75-80% of the time.
Servers who take an inordinately long time to bring me the check are the worst though and get docked every time.

And LOL at you thinking that tipping is a way to change server's future serving habits. Tipping is more like a bonus system, with a set nominal amount built in.
If you're tipping poor service and good service equally, you're probably doing it wrong

Tipping is there to supplement wages, and that's it.

Restaurants don't want to hire people and pay them a livable wages, so the tipping system was adopted.

I don't think of tipping as a way to change a person's future service, I'm asking if YOU think that. And I am not sure how you can lol at that idea at the same time as you claim it's a bonus system.

As for whether I'm doing it wrong or not, the tip police haven't yet written me a citation.

Re: Tipping

Local pizza joint and sub shop have tip jars at the register. If someone is stuck there working alone I generally toss them a buck or two because they're running themselves ragged for **** money.
