Like overtime, the period is weekly. That is the Federal law though. A state may have an additional law that requires it to be resolved daily (like how some have a >8hrs is OT law).

Dim sum fans,

How much do you tip at the dim sum places where you get food from the carts going around?

The Malaysian guy I go with that used to work there takes care of that.

I'm not a coffee drinker, but am an above average tipper and I wouldn't even think to tip a barista at a Starbucks if I went.
I can't imagine why anyone would tip @ Starbucks. That to me would be the same as tipping at a fast food restaurant.

How much do you guys tip in the following scenarios:
A) You're staying at a mountain resort and decide to use the valet because its cold out and you dont want to have to look for a parking spot and walk as far to get inside the building. Standard valet service, chosen for convenience/laziness.

B) You're staying at a mountain resort that advertises free on site parking. However when you get there you realize the on site lot only has about 80 spots for over 300 rooms, and is filled up by 3pm every day. So you can either park 3 blocks away or use the valet service.

Related question:
Does anyone tip the valet when they take your car to park it, or only when youre leaving and they bring it back to you?

In that case no tip when dropping off and maybe a dollar when picking up if you're planning on using the valet more than once. If you're only using the valet the one time just stiff them.

Tipping discussions get terrible so I'm replying to this here.

If a percentage tip would lead to a tip too small to bother with, maybe the service rendered shouldn't be a tipped service.

It's not really a tipped service, which makes the whole discussion even weirder. The baristas aren't paid the "tipped" wage afaik.

Rapini,

Lots of jobs get regular (sometimes pretty high) wages plus tips.

And in California there isn't even such thing as a "tipped wage." Everyone gets paid at least minimum wage. Does that mean you wouldn't tip at bars/restaurants/poker here?

I'm maybe in the minority here.

If I pay for valet, I probably $2-3, depending on what's in my pocket at the time. I don't feel bad, because I already paid their prices. I only tip on pick up.

If free valet, I generally leave $5. Only tip on pick up.

He has a McLaren though which is definitely $20 on drop off and another $20 on pick up.

I'd tip less. I don't think I could completely stiff at a bar or restaurant unless I knew for sure no tip is expected.

Do you think tips factor into a barista's choice to become a barista? Do you think it should? Those might be more interesting/appropriate questions to ask in this scenario.

Rapini,

Tipping standards/expectations here are the same as everywhere else if not a little higher. 20% is the "standard" expected tip here, even though there's no reduced tip wage.

Yes, baristas here expect to earn some additional income over their wage via tips.

I generally don't tip anything (well, maybe some small change) for my standard order, black coffee. I tip if I get something that requires additional effort, like an espresso drink or pour-over coffee.

Expecting or giving a tip a for a $5 coffee is pretty lol. People should pay more on top of that? Buying a coffee is not like receiving sit down service in a restaurant. When you buy the coffee, you're already paying for the work they do to make it. That's built into the price imo, and why you can go to the self serve espresso machine at the gas station and pay only $2 for a similar beverage.

I mean, I know some people do tip baristas, because on occasion I see a few bucks in the tip jar at the local Starbucks. But I always assume thats coming from someone who orders 10 mixed coffee beverages at once for their office, not anyone ordering just a drink or two.

Do people tip at fast casual pick up/take out places?

Like teriyaki plate type places that are small restaurants where the majority of business is take out, but they also have 4-6 small tables that some people eat at. You order at the cashier and pick up at the counter, there is no service.

When you pay with credit card though, there is a normal restaurant receipt with a separate tip line and total line to fill out, before you sign. Or for newer places, they just have iPad CC processing, where they turn the tablet to you and it asks you to press a button for tip, 10%, 15%, 20%, or no tip.

True, but the standard expectation is that you tip at a bar. Not necessarily true at a coffee joint.

Also at a bar you get served faster (even ahead of other patrons who have been waiting longer, at the bartenders sole discretion) and may even get a better pour if you tip generously.
At a coffee shop you're waiting in line and nobody behind you is getting served before you do - when its your turn, its your turn.

Now if Im at a place where I sit down and they bring the coffee/pastry out to me, or if I have an especially complex (annoying) order, then of course I have no problem tipping. But thats because its for service beyond simply pouring a coffee I order to take to go.

Nothing when you drop off and $5 when you pick up.

In both cases?

Idk, something just rubs me the wrong way about the second scenario, even though its not the fault of the valet workers.

Good Stuff Eatery uses a POS system that asks for a tip. Yeah, not tipping on a person entering my order into the computer.
