It's in the same category as a heavy poor, till a point. I assume bartenders have openly some discretion. But yes the favor is returned with a bigger tip

In my (biased) opinion-- it's a win-win for everyone. Bartender gets bigger tip, I get cheaper beer, and I'll come back there instead of the bar across the street next time I go for lunch, so the bars get the business.

I've been paying for Uber Black for years. I don't want to be hassled by tip hustlers.

I get my groceries delivered by a store which offers free delivery on orders >$100. What's the proper tip? I usually place orders that are approx. $115 but sometimes order as much as $200. Does the tip change?

I grew up getting groceries from this chain at a time when you would pull your car up and a bag boy would wheel out your cart and load them in your trunk. At that time all of the shopping carts had tags that said "No tips allowed".

The online shopping site says "Yes, our drivers accept tips."

captain,

$5.

Neil,

I would expect "tip hasslers" to be weeded out very quickly. I haven't taken as many lyfts but I haven't seen any of their drives talk about the tip at all, outside of when I directly question their feelings about driving for Lyft vs Uber (since many of them drive for both).

How do you guys feel about tips requested on screens that you press in front of the cashier?

Example: I was recently at a dessert stand which simply has a counter where you order at the cashier. There is no seating available, there is no service, other than ordering with the cashier who then simply gives you your pre-packaged items. When you pay by credit card, the screen asks you, Would you like to tip 15%, 18%, 20%, or No Thanks, with touch buttons for each.

My new thing with those is I just make it a game with myself; how fast can I push zero?

There is an independent restaurant that is Greek, but I would compare it to Panera where you order at the counter and the only thing someone does is bring your plate to your table. They have a place for a tip on the receipt. I always put 0.

Being asked to tip there at all pisses me off, but being asked to tip before the meal pisses me off oven more.

Would you say something about a tip jar just sitting on the counter near the register?

I've become numb to those, but once upon a time, they irked me a little when they were in places where no one should expect a tip. I'm beginning to view these screens as the modern version. If the interface was set up so that tip was more of a conscious choice then something you had to decline it would be closer to the tip jar scenario, and better in my view. But I think electronic tip jar is what they're going for.

I assume some other people actually prepare your food, as well?

Well yea, but...
1. Generally tips aren't shared with back of house
2. Someone prepares my food at McDonald's too, and throwing some fries on a plate along with some meat on a Gyro is no more involved than that

The worst part of "tipping" culture are the employees who justify giving workers a less than minimum wage salary because "you'll make tips to earn more than minimum wage". Individual franchisees like Subway are doing that for instance. It should be no reason that someone has to give an hour of their life to you for half of what a subway sandwich costs.

How standard is tipping the guys who deliver your appliances? I just had a washer and dryer delivered and those things are heavy as hell - and I live on the 3rd floor, no elevator, and 90 degrees outside. Prolly a rare time where tipping really seemed right, so I gave them $5 each.

Doesn't this never actually happen though? If you don't make up to minimum wage counting tips, they have to pay you minimum wage anyway, no?

Yeah minimum wage has to be paid regardless and I would love to see evidence of a fast food place trying to pull this off because it seems like fake news.

I used to work at Subway when I was younger and that was not the case. No one tips at subway either so it would be absurd to work there if that was the case. Probably illegal too.

I'm calling fake news.

I'd tip a $20 probably. Did you pay for delivery

yes. what he's trying to say is that your pay is about $3.50 plus tips which they hope get to min wage instead of just min wage (plus those same tips) so the employer pays less out of pocket. this is how restaurants work but not fast food like subway.

If I lived on a 3rd floor walk up Id feel extremely guilty/nitty tipping 5$ personally in this situation but that's just me. 20 sounds fine.
