I don't even bother with west coast games since I've been on Eastern time, it's just not possible for me to stay up. Trying ends up ruining both watching the game and the next morning.

Central time zone is the best, although I've never spent any significant time in Mountain and sometimes wonder if it would slightly edge Central.

got married. if it wasn't for my wife i'd probably still be going to bed at 3 and getting up at 7:45 - i can do that fine for a couple days but start running the risk of sleeping through alarms after a week of it. i probably fall asleep at ~1 on average now, which i can do all week just fine. that or i'd be addicted to benadryl.

I used to sleep around the clock for 14 years, with seemingly no way to fix it. Got a kid last year. Got maybe 3 hours of sleep/24h first 2 months. Eventually made a strict schedule for her. Had to be there for her in the morning, only room for sleep was when she was sleeping. Body was forced to adjust.

Got a job too and working days going to bed around 10:30, up at 5:30.
It's okay. The having a kid part eliminates the "being drowsy as **** in the morning and taking 2 hours to fully wake up" which is nice.
But what I really want is to stay up all night drinking doing projects/hobbies and get up whenever. Was a pretty awesome life in retrospect, though probably better/healthier now.

I want to be a morning person, and specifically I want to wake up early to go to the gym, so I hired a personal trainer and told him to meet me there at 6:30a. I know I'll make it there at 6:30 b/c I gave him my word that I'd be there. So I'm sort of forced to become an early riser.

I am a morning person but have done time as a night owl as well. As a kid through college I was always a night owl staying up late and sleeping late. Then I joined the Navy and was indoctrinated to the "morning" routine which demanded getting up early.

After the Navy I reverted to night owl as I had a flexible late work starting time. Then I went to graduate school where I stayed a night owl. Then I got work trading bond options starting at 7:20 am with a generous commute which meant my night owl days were over. I got up early and went to bed early and did that for a couple of decades.

Then I got a position trading Asia overnight (7:00pm to 2:00am) and that was a ***** to get accustomed too after years of early to bed early to rise. It took a while to get used too trying to keep myself awake at least a couple of months to get used to it. I did that for 2 years until I semi-retired and very quickly lapsed back into an early rising routine.

exposing yourself to as much sun as possible, particularly in the AM, good sleep hygiene (avoid blue light exposure, no tv/comp/phone stimulation, meditate before bed), and obv things like no caffeine/stimulants at night, etc. will retrain your circadian rhythm in no time. this worked in a matter of days for me and i've always been a late riser. /science

Got an extra alarm clock and set them far away from the bed at different places so I had to actually get up, walk across the room, and turn both off.

Or better yet, set one across the room, and set the louder one outside in another room, so that when the first one wakes you up the you have to walk further to turn off the other.

You'll definitely be awake by then.

^^^^^^

This is really good advice. I use the alarm on my phone and it's plugged in on the other side of the bedroom.

Keeping your alarm clock within arm's reach of your bed seems really dumb for the function it provides.

Ann Landers always advised people to wake up and smell the coffee!

I get up for work and with kids because I'm an adult, but left to my own devices I would definitely shift back to 2am - 10am.

And I'm fortunate that I can get in between 830 and 9 (staying later as needed obv) instead of at 8 without anyone caring.
Basically this, though I don't have kids. I live two blocks from my office so I can set my alarm for 7:30 and still easily be in by the time the phone starts ringing. I'd probably shoot myself within a month if I had to get up at 6 and take an hour commute or some ****.

8 hours of sleep seems huge for an adult

I need between 6 and 7 hours, so I go to sleep between 1 and 2 am

I let the sun do his job and could probably go without alarm clock and wake up 90% of the time around 7:45am

When I don't work I go to sleep at 3/4am and wake up at 9 and I just find a spot in the day for a nap

Is the wake up light thing really that big a deal ? I hate waking up even when its light outside tbh. I guess Im lucky I can show up at work just about whenever I want 80% of the time, going back to those hellish times would sure suck.

Being functional doesn't mean you're at your best. It has been well established that most adults need between 7-9 hours of sleep a night for optimal health and cognition.

I'm a night owl who has a job that starts at 6:15a with a commute of 25 minutes. I've never really adjusted* in that I still stay up until ~12:45a unimbibed.

If I have a few drinks I'm in bed by 10:30p, which is half the week. I too have two alarms set up: one right next to me, and a death-throated banshee across the room as a last line of defense; forces me to get up to preempt it or it'll wake the rest of the household.

*I do wake up at 5a on days off routinely though. Such a sweet sigh of relief to roll back over.

I also personalized and requested this schedule fwiw. I reap what I sow.

Yep, works amazingly. The big thing is that you wake up feeling awake, not wanting to go back to sleep or hit snooze. The "rising sun" tricks your natural instincts so your body is ready to go. It's allowing yourself to "naturally" be pulled out of sleep instead of a jarring alarm. Most of the "waking up" part you don't even realize, as it's very gradual-- my eyes usually don't snap open until the room is bathed in bright light.

The "sunset" feature also works really well, especially if you're amped up but need to sleep.

The last 15 months I've been getting up at 4:30 AM and I still haven't gotten used to it.

Aquire Dogs.

Think its part of getting older too, I rarely sleep past 8am these days even if I wanted too, but when I was a young man 17-21 ish I could easily sleep till 12-1pm

+1, this is great
I do this with a color changing bulb (LIFX), which is a cheaper solution than the product linked on Amazon

I combine it with a motion-sensing alarm clock on my phone (sleepbot on Android) - I set a 30 minute window, and if it detects me moving around in bed it will go off so I don't fall back asleep

I'm usually up around 545 to go to the gym around 615. Lately my biggest problem has been wasting time on my phone before getting out of bed, so I'm considering dropping the motion detecting alarm and leaving my phone on the other side of the room
