I still don't understand how they all knew how to spell that word by age 9, and thought it was common knowledge for a 7 year old. I used to crush class spelling bees so this one bothered me. It hit me pretty hard.

you still don't understand? it's super common with kids that once a group learns something that's counter-intuitive they ask others about it in order to fun of them.
i assume you never got it because of the autism and lack of soul.

Re: Things you thought were normal... till that fateful, maybe embarrassing, day
there are some interesting "regular" things in Asia that might surprise some Americans to see
vendors sell ice cream with pieces of bread instead of cones
ketchup is the most popular thing to put on pizza, chicken, pasta
tipping for service is only done when receiving good service
Mcdonalds, KFC, etc deliver
No posted speed limits anywhere (in Thailand)
Kingdoms with real kings still exist
Majority of people in Thailand don't know about the holocaust
Nobody else in the world uses American measurements (pounds, miles, etc)
Using a knife. Lot of places never use knives and have a hard time using them at a meal that requires them.
Its hard to find "XXL" clothing or size 12 Shoes
for me, I used to think "fat is unhealthy", bread is healthy, corn was a vegetable, and that the US recommendations for diet were reasonable guidelines to follow.

Haha, so true. I had asian suitemates in college that used spoons to cut their food. It was so weird because they refused to use knives in the dining hall etc. I'm like, "dude, just use a knife they're right next to the spoons", but nope. Old habits die hard, I guess.

When I was a kid I always thought the word "thesaurus" was pronounced theo-saurus. I don't know why, I guess that's how I tried to pronounce it the first time and it stuck. A few years ago I asked my wife, then gf, for one and she laughed at me.

has to be one of the most shocking moments of my entire life. Poor friends of mine during elementary school invited me over once, I went. They didn't have any snacks or anything, and no TV, and I just remember feeling bored/sorry for them and wanting to leave. I remember sitting on the couch and then a roach runs by on the ground. He then proceeds to grab it, bite it in half, and eat it. I almost threw up (still gag thinking about it) and yelled something to the effect of "WTF BRO" that a twelve year old would say. He looked at me like I was crazy.

They do have Wimpy's restaurants in the United States which are named after the Popeye character. I am not certain if it is related to the UK company or not. I have made brief use of the googles but still haven't been able to determine one way or the other.

I had a Dutch opare was i was younger and he introduced me to these. so good.
abt 20 years ago they had these dolls called dollywogs. They are basically black dolls. my dad told me that they had been banned because they were racist or soemthing. so he said we have to burn them all.

yeah I am a pretty white washed Chinese dude but as a kid my friends called me out on it too. I didn't even know...food is soft, doesn't need a knife...so why not? Works perfectly fine and is faster.
Anyways a reverse one...we were out having chinese hot pot, where you tick what you want off a sheet and submit your order. My friend and his wife kept asking me for lon-chong and I had no idea what it was. He kept askign the waiter and he had no idea. Finally they looked at the sheet themselves and checked it off and I saw it was luncheon meat. They are both asian but were born in Canada and speak English. I don't know how its possible but they both just never heard anyone say it and jsut saw it on the can and thought it was Chinese (they don't speak chinese). I guess the Cheon part of luncheon does sound pretty asian.
Anyways, i make fun of my friend because of this a lot.

Re: Things you thought were normal... till that fateful, maybe embarrassing, day
lol I too always thought Chik Fil A was pronounced like diva until about 6 months ago.
I live in NY where there's only 1 in the whole state, so I had actually never heard of it until I saw it mentioned on here. Luckily, I only embarrassed myself in private hanging out with my best friend and not in front of a group of people (though I'm sure many of the ppl I hang out with also never heard of it) when I asked him if he'd ever been there since he went away for college.

You can now add that you used to think the word was opare until you found out it was au pair.
