I thought the d sound to begin certain words was like the dj in django. My mother denies this but I hear it from her mouth to this day.

Everything was cool until one day after school in 8th grade I was hanging with some bros when I told them I needed to wash my hands because they were djirty. My friends noticed and started laughing at me, I was incredulous.

"Are you trying to tell me it's not Djirty Harry?!?"

Worst part was I came home and told my mom, who equally laughed at me.

When I was like 5 or 6 I started taking piano lessons. My piano teacher had huge boobs. The room where I got the lessons always had a particular scent. For some reason I just assumed that because her boobs were so big that the smell had to be her boobs. About a year or 2 later I had a substitute teacher for 1 class. I walked in and saw a guy was teaching me that day but the room still smelled the same. I was really confused so I asked him something like why does the room still smell like boobs? I don't 100% remember the exchange from there but I remember him telling me the smell was a candle or something and the lesson was awkward for me the rest of day.

I grew up in Northern NJ. If you drive on Rt 80 and go towards NYC, it becomes Rt 95 and you cross the George Washington Bridge. If you go towards Pennsylvania, you cross over the Delaware River. So growing up, I thought you had to go over a bridge in order to get to another state. It wasn't until I was like 10 or 11 I found out that wasn't true.

I didn't find out til we took my older brother to college in Rochester, NY. When we crossed from PA to NY, I was all confused that we didn't go over a bridge. My family laughed at me. They continue to do so to this day.

just remembered one

i was about 5 or 6 years old. me, my mum and grandfather are out doing some shopping. he goes into a betting shop, me and mum stand outside and wait a bit. i remember peeking into the shop and seeing horse racing on the tv in the corner. grandad comes out and we go home

i figured that he went in there, changed clothes, got on the back of a horse and competed in the race. i musta asked some questions about what its like to ride a horse or something cos my mum figured out my misconception. still talks about it

edit: oh and i thought a star wars lightsaber was a lightsaver until i was about 15 and someone heard me say lightsaver, oops

edit 2: sigh i thought 'automobile' was another word for 'tank' because on civilisation 1 for the amiga when you research automobile it gives you tanks. got into an argument with someone who was like 'no mate, cars and vans and stuff are also automobiles' and i was like NO THEY AREN'T. wont be divulging how old i was for that one b/c too embarassing

I thought A1 sauce was Al sauce until I was like 15. I was at a BBQ and and asked my brother to "pass the Al sauce." He looked at me like WTF for 20 minutes.

When I was quite young, not too sure the exact age but primary school aged, I thought Alzheimer's was Old Timers. It made sense at the time.

When I was little I thought Muhammad Ali was "Muhamma Dollie".

And in 3rd grade we learned about Martin Luther King being assassinated in 1968. When the teacher said that, I said "hey, that's the year I was born." The other kids in class were like "Duh, we all were."

I've had middle-aged redneck patients who say "old timers."

If you grew up in northern NJ, NY State was literally right over the border. Without a bridge.

Yup. I used to play hockey at Ramapo once a year for a solid decade.

I lived in Morris County so I never drove north into NY. Only went into NYC.

Now you know why my family made fun of me lol.

Cook the bacon first and then put it on the pizza when you make the pizza. Otherwise, you'll have a pool of bacon grease floating on top.

Had a Korean friend in jr. hs. I went over to his house and I was asked to take off my shoes. I thought their house was dirty and they were being respectful for the dirt not to ruin my new sneakers.

In the first paragraph are you saying your mum sometimes pronounces it this way?

What is her heritage? There are some languages in Europe where a "d" softens to "dj" in combination with a following vowel like an "i" or "e"

It's similar to how in English a "C" softens from being pronounced "K" to being pronounced "S" (car, cop but circus, centre) or a G less consistently goes soft (gap, golf but general, giant)
