Somewhat related story:

Last week I was out with three female companions eating dinner and having drinks. When the bill comes (single bill), Friend A grabs it and starts trying to split the bill using the numbering method. It's clear immediately she isn't throwing in tip when telling us how much we each have to put in, which will result in our bill being significantly short. I point this out, and she tells me that she can handle it herself. I go to the bar and get another drink.

About 5 minutes later, I come back and Friend B has the bill. They have realized that they do, in fact, need to add in tip, but they have it in their heads (Friend A and B have apparently been "thinking" it through) that you can't tip on individual bills, and instead have to tip on the entire bill (i.e., you can't tip 20% on $20 and 20% on $20 and instead have to tip 20% on $40) and splitting the check isn't going to work. I point out that this doesn't make sense at all, and they both tell me that if they wanted my help, they would have asked for it. I go to the bar and get another drink.

When I finally return, it turns out that we're all expected to pay one girl, who will then pay the entire bill instead of us each just paying our own portion. I give the girl my $$ and she pays, but as I'm walking out I see that she has left a woefully small (~10%) tip. Gotta love it.

FYI Friends A and B are both currently med school students. I fear for the future.

I have a love/hate relationship with correcting grammar on the internet. Certain mistakes are unforgivable and deserve criticism, e.g., "would of" is inexcusable because a verb intuitively needs to be there. Replacing the verb with a preposition makes negative sense. But no one knows, or should be expected to know, what the past unreal conditional is, so I don't gripe about "If I would have." The more arrogantly someone points out a grammar mistake, the more pissed I'll get, because I guarantee I can take a ten-page writing sample from that person and find twenty grammar and punctuation mistakes, not to mention awkward phrasing and word choices. Not that I'm perfect. I still make enough mistakes that I periodically revise writing samples.

(Not saying anything about atakdog--he's fine. Most people have no clue about the past unreal conditional and I'm glad he pointed it out in this conversation.)

Isn't this technically raising the pot? I'd be more annoyed by anyone announcing "raise" or "bet" when it's been checked to them. Just put the money in the pot.

Things that piss me off is people who like to correct grammar on the internet. Not only that but people who think we care that they like correcting grammer on the internet because those people sound like geeks that have never got laid in their life.
