What seems fair? What seems fair?

I loaned/rented my car to my sister's family for the summer so my nephew would have something to drive while he's home from school. I'm charging them $100 a month to cover insurance payments ($50) plus a little more.

Yesterday my sister messages me that the car was stalling at stops so my brother-in-law took it to the dealer to get checked out. Turns out to be a problem with an air sensor(?) and it was going to cost around $500 to fix. I said get it fixed and the final bill is $575.

We never discussed who would be responsible for repairs while they had it so I just want to get some input from an outside party who should pay what.

The car was given to me by my dad. He didn't want to bother selling it and thought I could get some use out of it. I own a truck that I use for work so I really didn't need the car, but it's nice to drive for non-work trips.

Given the specific problem, this really seems to me like it should be on you.

You pay.

it's your car and they are even paying to borrow it, why would this not be on you?

You should pay it. Its your car. They are just renting. If you rent a house and theres a problem with the plumbing then the landlord pays.

If you werent charging i might be more inclined to suggest they foot the bill.

If I was charging them more per month, I wouldn't have even bothered asking.

What's the going rate to rent a 2001 Buick Century?

Since it's a normal routine repair then it's on you b/c you own the car.

It doesn't matter what the going rate is to rent a car. If the same problem happens with a rental car than the rental company pays for to repair, not the renter.

The same problem would have happened if you didn't rent the car so you'd end up having to pay for it anyway.

No clue cause nobody rents an 11 yo car. I would say $100 is more than fair, especially for a family member. The air censor is something that deteriorates over time. I wouldn't expect her to pay for it cause she rented the car for a few months.

I guess I understand making them pay the insurance for those months, but why the "little extra"? Family yo.

I'm not asking who's liable, I agree that it's 100% my responsibility. I was wondering what's fair since I am renting them a car so cheaply.

And, as somebody pointed out, you'd never expect to pay for routine maintenance on a rental car. It would be one thing if they did some cosmetic damage to it, but this is **** you were going to have to pay for anyway.

you sound like a real piece of **** charging your sister to use a crappy car for a few months then thinking its fair for them to pay for routine maintenance on it too

Have you calculated the pro-rated charge you will ask them for due to the amount of wear on the tire tread yet, or do you need a thread to help you though that one?

As this is a deterioration repair, you can charge them the fraction of the bill for the fraction of the deterioration that they caused, as opposed to that you caused. Given the share of driving they have done vs you on the car, I'd guess that rounding down to $0 is fair. Are you going to ask your dad to pay for a share too because he owned the car before you? If they'd wrecked your bumper or something or run over some nails, on them. Since instead this is a long term wear and tear thing to your car, you pay. The fact that you gave them a good deal shouldn't matter. If you want to say "hey man, how about you keep the car and we're even" that's cool too, I have no idea what a 11 year old buick costs.

You should be paying them for repairing your pos car that you're somehow charging them $100/month for.

that repair is more than a 1/3 of what the car is worth.

Going to the dealer for the repair was def the right play.

How did you not get that everyone was saying that the fair thing is for you to pay everything?

If it happened while I had it it would sit until I found a cheaper mechanic.

Tell me about it. I need to unload it and my truck and get a new truck that gets better mileage.

It was in the shop before I found out about it.

he's waiting for someone, somewhere, to say anything other than that so he can side with that person and claim that there's a number of people supporting the side he's on.
