What happens to some of these people? Do they reform when they lose their friends or are there enough of them to band together?

I had one of those friends who were quick to use/borrow/steal from everyone but would save the "good" top ramen for himself and share the crap ones at his place. This guy would do things like eat whole doughnuts inside supermarkets and be purposely short when buying candy to scam the cashiers. Nobody likes him, dont know where he is now.

Why do people refer to stingy douches in their stories at "friends". Why are you guys friends with these people, or why were you ever friends with them?

If this is to me, I said "had"
I was his friend before he became a huge douche. The guy made and lost friends frequently.

Have a old friend that would always come to house parties purposely with no cash to chip in for beer. Usually just a given to bring $5 or somethign for a cup and what not. Or he would just assume he could find a cup sitting on a table or something and use that for free instead of paying. What makes it even worse most of these parties were at our close friends places. Then whenever confronted about chipping in some money he would just say something like ohhh well i think im done drinkin now thinkin he should have to pay because of that. Stingy and cheap people def put me on super tilt and i really don't understand them.

Do you really have trouble wrapping your head around the fact that people can have friends with bad personality traits?

You name a bad quality in a person, and I can probably think of a person with that quality who I considered a friend at some point in my life.

People have a lot of friends over the course of their lives, people aren't perfect. It isn't rocket science.

The ramen you can find at Asian supermarkets is worlds different from the cheap college student crap, and does have higher quality noodles and seasoning (and different, more interesting seasoning as well). I've never noticed much difference between the cheap kinds.

Haven't read the entire thread but one of the stingiest, and unhealthy, habits I've seen is someone using the little plastic "plackers" (sic?) for flossing their teeth and then setting it down in their living area for repeated future use! Bad enough to reuse something so inexpensive but then to leave it laying around for visitors to see is just too much.

I guess I'll take this post piece by piece.

This is hardly the case. They aren't stealing from the store, certainly, since manufacturer's coupons are paid out to the store by the manufacturer. Many stores (both of the stores I shop at, for instance) have a policy that only 4 of any given manufacturer's coupon can be doubled per customer. So they have put a rule in place to prevent matching the discount on 1000 bars of Irish Spring. But they are willing to match it 4 times or whatever, because it brings you into the store. And 99/100 coupon clippers don't buy *only* in coupons like the insane-o's on the show last night, so it's still worth it for the store to match mfr's coupons.

One might make the argument that these folks are stealing from the manufacturers. I still don't really buy that, though.

The flip side is that only in America can your hard work doing something off-the-wall (e.g., collecting coupons) be realized in dollars. I agree with you re: buying things you don't need. But my first thought was that one could do this and donate all of the non-perishables to a foodbank and all of the hygiene products to a homeless shelter or school. And it turns out that the last guy (and from what I read last night, a lot of coupon-clippers) does exactly that. And the stores know it and are ok with it.

Now, if you think it's stealing only if you don't use it, well
(1) I'd say that can't be a reasonable definition of stealing, and
(2) I think most things end up eaten or donated.

And the donated stuff gets the product out to new households, which is what the coupon campaign was supposed to accomplish for the manufacturer in the first place (which is partially why above I said I don't buy that this is stealing from mfr's).

I said effectively stealing because I understand what they are doing is technically legal. However, it isn't a stretch to say that what these people are doing goes against the spirit of the promotions they're capitalizing on. Future prices and promotions will reflect these troll-beasts' actions, and it's going to punish the rest of us. Would you be as pleased if the manufacturer was small or medium-sized? What about if they simply forgot to put "one per customer" and were legally obligated to give out dozens of freebies?

The reason this kind of stuff "only happens in America" (lol @ you attributing it to the hard-working hutzpah of these welfare-collecting slobs that somehow have 8 hours a day to clip coupons) is because they would get laughed out of the store in most of the world. If you think these companies are honouring these coupons because of how much they appreciate the devotion of these chubbos, rather than the culture of litigation and "alert the media about this injustice!" blowhardedness that permeates Western society you're deluding yourself.

Obviously it's nice when junk gets donated to charity, but the idea that this happens often with these people or that there aren't better ways to accomplish corporate donations is stupid.

They are just regular coupons. All you have to do is wait for a sale that drops the price. So let's say you have a coupon for $1 off a can of Pringles. You find a store that has a sale and is selling them for $1.

chaos theory tho.

my contribution: -

guy aged like 20 came back to live with the folks for the holidays. brought his own whitening toothpaste and mouthwash. knowing his sisters only had regular toothpaste he would take his toothpaste and mouthwash into the bathroom to use, then take them back into his room, twice a day. did this for fear his sisters would use them.

he's 26 now and i can report he's not quite as ****ish.

It's not like the coupon-clippers guerrilla attack the companies. Hell, there was a whole tv special last night on this. If you don't think the companies account for this, then you are the delusional one. Yes, the companies could write one-per-customer, but why bother? How could they enforce it?

Also, it didn't seem to me that these people were on welfare or clipping coupons for 8 hr/day. But even if they were, my point was that it's pretty cool that a person has the option to weigh the utility to his/her family of doing this versus something else. If you have 8 kids and spend $400/week at the grocery store, and you can save $300/week by going insane on coupons AND you can stay at home and raise your kids, that might be more attractive to many than going to work full-time and hiring a nanny, for instance. Not to mention that a $300/week tax-free job is like full-time $10/hr taxed. Not that that's a lot, but it's more than many make.

My point wasn't that these people should be lauded; rather I was pointing out something that you look at and say "lol@America" and that I look at and think wow, I'm glad I live in America.

What most people aren't aware of is that you can talk to the store manager and find out if he/she has coupons relating to the products you're buying. If you have a pleasant, undemanding attitude, they will bend over backwards for you.

I have had the manager hand me manufacturer's coupons on the spot, and there have been lots of times I get stuff for free or for a ridiculously low price. Last year I got fifteen boxes of Grape Nuts for 50 cents each (finished eating them last month), and I've gotten free toothbrushes, toothpaste, and shampoo many times. The manager is happy because the store is reimbursed for the manufacturers' coupons, and the manufacturer is happy because they're selling more stuff. No one is stealing here. If you want 200 candy bars, I say go for it.
