$2 at a time? He's trying to smooth out the variance in gas prices. Smart guy. And by smart I mean not smart.

Additions to the federal no-fly list itt.

LOL @ never having heard of a cash bar at a wedding. Some people don't want to pay thousands of extra dollars so acquaintances thrice removed can get sloshed for free.

Carefully choosing guests and having a sensibly capped open bar is the best course imo.

This. I personally would never want to have a cash bar at my (lol amirite) wedding and would prefer nearly anything to that option, up to and including a dry wedding.

I know an old farmer, rich on pension, and plays live $1-$2 at the local casino.

Pretty stingy guy, seen him pick napkins off the floor an stuff them in his pocket.
Once he found a chapstick stick on the ground turned to me and asked me what it was. When I told him what it was he said "ahhh my lips are dry" and proceeded to apply the chapstick to his lips.

It's pretty bad, but I think I hate it less than offering a cash bar.

Yeah, 'sensible' is obviously extremely subjective. I think budgeting $30-100 per known drinker is sensible, depending on the size of the party and the cost per drink, etc.

Ideally, you'd be able to stock the bar yourself. Super cheap, you can supply exactly what you want - everyone is happy.

I think we should start another thread, "the most wasteful things you've seen someone do" which would be epic if we could tape half the poasters in this thread for just one day. (I'm not saying that is a bad thing -- just that poker players, especially broke poker players that cannot cut it in any other forum here, tend to brag about how much money they can waste).

I've been a guest at several cash bar weddings. Whatever, it was fine. I've been a guest at one dry wedding. That was the one of the worst things I've ever experienced. If you aren't going to provide booze at least offer the option for me to buy some.

I completely agree with your sentiment, but here is the deal:

Every wedding I have been at, I'd say half have been open bar, and half have been free beer/wine but pay for anything else. I am fine with either.

Some couples/families just don't approve of alcohol. I obviously do approve of it but that is their choice, and their life they are trying to start and celebrate with their friends/family. I know you want to be drunk 24/7 but every now and then comes a time where you just need to respect the wishes of your friends/family. Even if it is only for a few hours. If it is really a dry party they will be going to bed early and just be respectful for a couple hours and you can get blasted before you know it. If you can't do that, then I suggest REHAB.

That is assuming you expect the Christians in this country to you accept your normal every-day debauchery. Or do you think you are a special snowflake? (Just a note: I am not saying you are right and they are wrong or vice versa. But the hypocrisy goes both ways whether you believe it or not).

I'd like to hang out with someone like you from NYC someday. So far I have only had the "pleasure" of people similar to the NYC idiot you are referring to. I seriously hope to respect your city someday before I die, but it is looking grim right now.

Anything is better than a dry wedding. Guests would gladly fork over $5/drink to loosen up a bit at such a formal event than endure all the nonsense completely sober.

Shoe, I'm not tight with anyone that would look down on drinking. The religious nuts in my family are Irish-Catholics, so I've got no problem on the booze front from them. If I was friends or family with people who looked down on drinking I guess I could see your take.

Also at the one dry wedding I attended I did abide by their wishes and didn't grumble one word while I was there. It did completely suck though, and I certainly don't feel obliged not to bash their wedding anonymously.

no. Either I'm being levelled by 20 people or you guise are dumb. They are totally wrong not to invite her to the rehearsal dinner.

I have a wedding I'm in in the middle-of-nowhere Minnesota this weekend. My girlfriend is obviously invited. If we get there and they tell me she's not invited to the rehearsal dinner am I supposed to take the car and leave her in the motel room with the promise that I'll try to bring her leftovers? Have any of you dated an IRL girl for >6 months???

Sweet thread.

A few incidents I can remember...

1) When I was 20 I worked at Ace Hardware. One weekend we had a sale on single rolls of generic paper towels. I believe they were normally $1.19/roll and they were on sale for 99 cents with a limit of two. An Indian family came in (mother/father/son/daughter) and just purchased paper towels...but in 4 separate transactions. The 5 year old daughter would go through and buy "her" paper towels to get the 40 cent discount within the roll limit, then the son and so on. In total, this family spent like 8 bucks on paper towels and saved $1.60. I'm incredibly amused by the thought of this family piling into their minivan to hit up the paper towel sale at Ace Hardware...they probably spent more on gas than they did in savings.

2) My dad used to save his Starbucks cups, rinse them out, and go back for 50 cent re-fills. I told my dad it would make much more sense...and save him a lot more time and money if he just bought Starbucks ground coffee and made it at home.

I have a friend who is relatively well off but when we have social gatherings he brings cheap wine but will only drink from the other more expensive bottles. Totally goes thru the bottles on the table and selects the best one.

This probably qualifies as the stingiest thing I've ever done. I cringe confessing to it.

Anyway, you can find bags sitting around that aren't in the trash and then dump out the probably 80% full bag and get a refill.

I don't think I ever did this past the age of 18.

I see, I misunderstood. This family is English, and they actually pride themselves on being descendants of the the Mayflower pilgrims. I was told about it right away in my interview (I forgot how he worked it in but boy was he proud of it), and they had some book about it in the office which had their family name in it.

I actually have what I consider to be an even more outrageous story than the ones I already posted. I am enjoying this thread and mentioned it to a neighbor, nice guy in his mid fifties about. He told me a story that is disgustingly stingy.

When he was 14 years old his father worked for an extremely wealthy family, as an all around handyman/gardener/landscaper/driver. His father got hurt and had no benefits and wasn't getting any pay and the family was broke. The patriarch of the family was throwing a party in his waterfront mansion for "anyone who was anyone", doctors, attorneys, politicians, wealthy business owners.

The man offered my then 14 year old neighbor a job at the party helping out with setting up tables and chairs, carrying trays and clearing tables, all around clean up stuff and parking/valeting cars. It was July and it was very hot that day, and this man had rented a tux for him to wear. This kid got there around 11am to start with set up and worked until almost midnight. The deal was that he would be paid $1.50 an hour.

He worked his ass off all day in the heat, serving, cleaning, parking cars. He was not offered any food all day, and ended up asking if he could have something. He was given some potato salad and told to hurry to eat it, that was it. He ended up retrieving quite a few cars, people starting leaving around 830 so for a little over 3 hours he was getting tipped for his valet service.

He couldn't believe his luck, everyone was handing him at least a dollar, a couple of people gave him 2 and one guy gave him a five dollar bill. When it was almost midnight the guests were pretty much gone, and the man holding the party offered my neighbor a ride home since he lived a few miles away.

As Bill waited for the ride, he excitedly took his wad of cash out of his pocket and counted it. He could'nt believe he had made $38. He started totalling how much it would be after he got paid for the hours worked. The man asked what he was doing and he replied he was counting tips, at which point the man said "let me see them". Bill handed the money over, and the man counted it and annouced "$38".

He then said, okay, let's see, you got here at 11am, worked almost until midnight, but took a break to eat....... you know what, I am just goint to pay you for the full 13 hours. He then proceeded to count $20 out of the tips and take $18 back for himself, and put it in his pocket. He paid him with his own tips, and actually kept almost half for himself. He said it should come to $19.50, but keep the $20.

My neighbor couldn't believe this was happening, he had already totalled the money in his head and coulndn't wait to go home and show his family how much he had earned and give it to them. Not only was this man not going to pay him, he took money back. He said something like, "don't I get to keep the tips" to which the man replied that the deal was $1.50 an hour, and that is what he was being paid. He went home and told his father, who felt badly but said there was nothing he could do, if he tried to argue with him about it he would be fired.

Buy the cheap stuff and then retire early and look un-cheap in your yacht. :P
