Re: Stingiest thing you've seen someone do
He said "take what you need" because he was busy but owed money for pizza. I think it's pretty douchey to come up to someone while collecting money for pizza, and then when they say "take what you need" you decide that you have a license to come up with other things you need money for.
It's basically "Ok this guy gave me $25 when he owed $5. I need to give him $20 back, but oh wait, I did need a few extra bucks for xxxx, I'll just take it out of this guy's change."
Some of you think this is ok?

Re: Stingiest thing you've seen someone do
I once heard of someone who was broke online, asked to borrow some money to play a tourney, and when he shipped it for $6900, didn't so much as thank the person who loaned him the $$, let alone get him anything or take him out for drinks

Re: Stingiest thing you've seen someone do
if you were collecting money for pizza, and i was too lazy to pause a game of fifa to count out 5 dollars, and i gave you a wad of money, and you took 8$ out, 5 for pizza and 3 for tip or a 2 liter of soda no i wouldnt be angry at all. if i was planning on getting angry at something like that i certainly wouldnt say take what you need. no one has answered my question either, how/when/in what tone would you say take what you need jokingly.
in before someone says if i hand you 1000$ for a 5 dollar pizza.

Re: Stingiest thing you've seen someone do
I'll accept some of the blame for not being more concise. Had I handed him the money and told him to take $5 and he had taken $9, then it's a dishonest move on his part. And I'm not a stingy person beyond being a poor college student.
Also, I wasn't angry. I was surprised and said nothing beyond asking him why he took more than $5.

Re: Stingiest thing you've seen someone do
I don't know if "stingy" is the right word for this, but whatever:
My wife and I go to a convenience store one night. We take the dog, so I wait outside while she goes in and buys what we need. A guy walks out of the store having just bought a Maxim magazine and some sort of chewing tobacco and asks me if I can give him $6 because he parked his car in a lot and doesn't have enough to pay to get it out.
Edit: He was holding his purchases in plain sight.

Re: Stingiest thing you've seen someone do
Not really stingy but definitely some kind of less-than-desirable personality trait.

So did you buy the Maxim from him for 6 bucks?

Re: Stingiest thing you've seen someone do
One time my roommate went out to buy us beer, pinwheels, a ball & paddle and an oversized cowboy hat. He stopped to pick up the latest issue of Rhode Island Slut but his wallet got stuck in the dispenser. He asked an old lady for change of a dollar but she said she didn't have any (which seems questionable since old ladies usually carry a change purse). So that was pretty stingy of her.

It's questionable all right. The odds are like one in a million... but I'm telling you there's a chance.

how did he end up getting his wallet? she sounds like the kind of lady that would offer to watch it for him while he goes to get change and then steal it and run off before he gets back.

That's exactly what happened, and it was the worst part of the whole ordeal. Whenever I think about her giving our pinwheels to her grandkids it makes my blood boil.
