Went for dinner at a restaurant I had never tried before. Got the bill and saw they added $.02 to "round up" the total. Like this-

Subtotal- $31.54
Tax- $ 1.34
Rounding-$ .02
Total- $32.90

Would you...

A. think this makes sense, it's only two cents added. No worries?
B. Call the server over and tell them they can stick the two cents where the sun don't shine?

Tax- $ 1.34
Rounding-$ .02
Total- $32.90
TIP- $5
Rounding-$2.90
Total -$35

Pretty dumb move by the restaurant. It will take a lot of pennies to make up for the customers who get pissed off on principle. If they really wanted to avoid pennies they should round in the customer's favor,

This is kinda weird at a restaurant. Usually random change just gets tossed in to the tip.

wow, dumbest thing i've ever seen. that's definitely gotta piss off the nits more than it saves trouble.

Yeah that makes no sense given how many people pay with credit cards and those who don't are generally going to round with the tip. So it's not like they actually have to handle pennies hardly ever.

Of course no way it's the waiters who implement something like this, they're just the ones who gets stiffed when someone goes ballistic.

People have never been handed back like a nickel or a quarter or something instead of 4 cents or 24 cents when getting change? Just seems cyclical. Obviously just give them the tip you were going to give them minus the 2 cents if you want to be nitty about it.

Problem is, nits don't work this way. They go ballistic over 2 cents when it is not in their favor. Of course, they conveniently ignore all the times business have rounded in their favor.

I wouldn't care, I'd prefer all businesses worked this way as the penny should be eliminated, but agree that this is only going to cause headache for the business, especially the waitstaff, without providing any real benefit. If they want to eliminate pennies they should just always round down and this usually results in bigger tips anyways as customers are glad the restaurant isn't being a nit.

CLIFFS: Being a nit is always -EV

Considering most people who have replied on this have said this is the first time we've ever seen rounding on a bill itself, this seems like a specious argument. In particular your assumptions that rounding ever favours the customers is completely unfounded - For all we know that cash register always rounds up.

A waiter giving you a couple cents extra change on the fly (that he'll almost always get right back in the tip) is completely different from institutionalized shaving.

plus in this case the pennies are going to the restaurant, not the waiter

yes its the first time Ive actually seen "rounding" as an itemized cost on a bill. that doesnt mean its the first time any of us have gotten a quarter instead of 23 cents, etc.

7 of us were on holiday in Spain and were walking to the Taxi rank, meaning that 4 people would take a taxi and 3 people in the other. "Scrooge" ran to the front of the group to make sure he was in the group of 4, thereby paying slightly less than the group of 3.

Another "Scrooge" won a big bet on the horses on a day out and refused to buy a round of drinks for the group. The win was £300 and a round of drinks. would have cost £25-£30. In revenge the group left him on the night out forcing him to buy a taxi home by himself for £100 (70 mile trip home).

The same "Scrooge" as above refused to pay out after a Poker Tourney Win when he had agreed to a split of 50/25/25. I virtually had to threaten him to get paid.

1st one stingy.

2nd one standard, I dont spend 10% of my winnings on my friends when I hit something. Do you rebate him 10% when he is down alot? Guess my friends take their gambling a bit more seriously as none of us would expect this.

3rd is just stealing, would stop being friends with him here.

I'm assuming the situation was his group of friends taking turns buying rounds of drinks, and Scrooge refusing his turn, even though he had made a score earlier.

You have to know the guy. Spoilt Brat only child, Eric Cartman type. Takes care of number 1. Some of the group had won similar bets and had bought a round of drinks.

in australia our lowest denomination coin is the 5c piece, but transactions are to the 1c. so rounding happens all the time if you pay in cash. if a bill is 10.02 it rounds down to $10, if it is 10.03 it rounds up to 10.05

if you pay via credit card you are charged 10.02
