Last time I camped, we had some LCD-laced tea and this one dude chewed on the tea bag.

Spoiler:
Meaning I couldn't.

As an employee, confronting someone about a low tip is stupid because it happens constantly. You'd last half a day on the job before getting fired. Also, it just makes you look cheap and petty. "Oh no you didn't tip me enough, I'll get revenge by making a scene."

Had an out of town friend who once showed up to my apartment unannounced. That alone did not bother me, we were in our 20s and I liked to go out drinking with him so no biggie. The next day some other friends say let's meet at this place with great Vietnamese sandwiches. We were young and broke and they were delicious and $1.50. We head for the bus and my friend doesn't have enough cash for bus + sammie so I give him some change.

We get to the place and all chow our food, friend wants a second. Goes to the counter and orders 1 and asked to write a check (LOL). This is like 1997 so checks are not that outrageous a request. The counter person says no checks for less that $3. So he buys 2 sandwiches and comes back to the table saying "I had to buy 2 sandwiches so I could write a check, anyone want to buy one?"

I flip and tell him give me that muther****ing sandwich you cheap bastard who has slept at my apartment and bummed change for me to get to the sandwich place. Jesus Christ.

He is since a reformed cheapo but I have to remind him of this at every opportunity.

If you heard about a bar that had a policy they would not welcome you back if you refused to tip--maybe not for one drink but for a significant (>$20) tab, how would you react?

Think they were pricks and never go there? Or think "good, cheap people suck and need to be told so"?

Someone posted earlier about how these cheap asses often make horrible decisions regarding much larger sums of money and it's very true.

A few years ago some girl at work was complaining about how high gas prices had gotten and how she has this way of knowing what the cheapest gas places are and goign to those places etc.

This chick came into work everyday with a big fancy Starbucks coffee, probably at least 4+ bucks for this thing and it was there pretty much every day without fail.

Amazing that someone would jump through 1000 hoops to save 3 cents a gallon on gas but have no problem shelling out $150+ a month on fancy coffee as opposed to say brewing up some Foldgers at home.

i dont consider myself stingy at all, but got called out by a friend the other day. i always tip ~20% at restaurants, but only for the food. i dont know how or why i started doing it (guessing i got it from my dad, who is the oppo of stingy on most things), but i dont tip on the alcohol drank throughout dinner. i always thought it was kinda rediculous to tip 20% of drinks especially on like an overly expensive bottle of wine. unheard of or somewhat normal?

i guess i am stingy if bringing alc into places is stingy. bringing in a water bottle of vodka is pretty standard amongst my friends when going to sporting events

Standard and acceptable at places that rape you on price like stadiums and airports imo.

$1 per drink is my standard when I am out. I subtract the cost of drinks from the total. tip 18-25% depending on service, then add $1 per drink.

Wouldn't 20% tip on a drink be less than $1 usually? Unless you're going premium mixed drinks. If it's such a big deal to tip 20% on drinks with your meal, you should probably drink less. It's just funny to me how we get raped so hard on drink prices but then there's a problem with the tip.

Seriously.

You can just play it off like, "hey, I think you mixed up the tip in there" or something as opposed to accusing him of stealing. This gives him a way out of it.

I know that's what I would do if I was someone do this. And if I accidentally did this I expect people I'm with to call me out on it as well.

If he freaks and overreacts and gets defensive then you know you caught him in mid-steal but that's not your fault. He's a douche and you aren't going to want to hang out with him again anyway.

So many of these stories I think the people around them should be stepping up to the plate to correct the "oversight" instead of having to tip twice and lame crap like that.

I don't want this (actually good) thread to get derailed into Tippingville. My quick thought on this, as a bartender, is that it's a bad idea. Tipping is not mandatory, that's the nature of it. If someone doesn't tip on a big tab at my place--which almost never happens--they just get the world's worst service from that point on, wait ten minutes waving their twenty in the air, etc.

There's one guy who comes in on the reg and drinks six or so beers and never, ever, ever tips a dime. He waits until everyone else gets served, and then if I see a table that needs cleaning or I have to take a piss, he waits for that, too. It seems worth it to him, though to save those 3-6 dollars, so w/e.

Well, don't nightclubs (especially the fancier/nicer kind) generally rape you on drinks too? If it's cool for stadiums to smuggle it in then I'm not exactly sure why it would be so much more uncool for nightclubs. Not sure about that though. Just thinking it through.

The tale that he was giving was in regards to an overpriced bottle of wine at dinner. He wasn't at some cheap bar paying $4.50 for a Rum and Coke or something. So he tips 20% on the meal but doesn't include 20% on the $180 bottle of wine that he got with it or whatever.

I briefly dated a bartender at some private club/bar type of fancy place. So some multi-millionaire would get a shot or drink of something that cost $100 and she would get a $20 tip just for pouring it pretty much (and I guess being a friendly and professional presence there too). She thought it was completely ridiculous but, of course, wasn't complaining.

A former cop here was notorious as the biggest cheapskate around, but the final straw was this gem.

There was a local restaurant owner (fried chicken place) that was very friendly to the local officers. Not only did he offer 1/2 priced food to officers, but did a ton of catering and always brought the extras to the police station for no charge.

One day, Cheapie went through the drive thru, bought the $5 special for $2.50 and proceeded to the station. Once he got there, he found out that the chicken place had just dropped off some food. He gets back into his car and drives across town and demands his money back.

Pissed off the owner so bad, no more free food and no more discount............

If the beers he was getting were draft (not bottles) I would probably consider pouring it a bit shorter or leaving a lot of foam on the top as well.

TBH I would almost always say something in a scenario like I described. I just met the guy though. I'm new to his unit, and I simply don't have the "right" to be calling him out on stuff like this until I'm more familiar with everyone. I don't want to become the ******* right before heading to Kabul.

I ****ing hate this attitude. I'm pretty sure your job description says serving a customer takes priority over taking a piss or cleaning a table and that people should be served approximately in the order they arrived at the bar waiting to be served. You say it's not mandatory but then proceed to not do your job properly. You're the bigger douche here.

I'm really surprised to see people posting about this gas-pump thing. Having to sit and wait for the slow trickle at the end was a super-common thing for everyone like 15 years ago.

I never have to wait for the trickle at the end anymore because all the pumps have those ATM-card swipey things and I never pre-pay in cash. Only exception is if I'm at some station where the ATM-swipey thing is out of order but that's pretty rare.

I wouldn't do that, but I certainly make sure that bad tippers get the smallest possible (short 4 count) pour on liquor drinks. Good tippers get good drinks served quickly, that's how it works.

It's standard and completely expected for someone who comes in regularly and never, ever tips. If I was a customer who behaved like that I would completely expect slowness to be the consequence. In fact, I would be surprised to ever get any service at all.

It's not in my job description to quickly serve every non-tipping ******* with a smile, my boss who owns the place does the exact same stuff when he bartends, and this is totally standard. I would say I'm actually nicer about this stuff than most service industry people I know, and it sounds like you're probably the guy tipping a quarter every second drink.

I park my car up to 10min walk from certain places so I don't have to pay the parking fee. I just hate paying for parking.
Sometimes I take earlier exits and take little roads to avoid paying highway toll.

My dad has a friend who owns part of the family business and is very very well off (Multi-millionaire). He drives a really nice Mercedes but everytime there's the slightest downhill he engages the clutch "To save gas". He doesn't realise he pays more than what he saves "in gas" to change his clutch every 2 year since he uses it so much.
The same guy, whenever he goes to a restaurant and someone else pays, asks for the receipt so he can put down the expense for the Company to pay less taxes. He also does this whenever he's with someone that buys w/e from a shop. When I was a kid we went to the guys house for like a day or something and the only thing he had to offer us was tap water and some old hard bread with butter.
