Also a decent chance there was something really incriminating in those emails that has not yet leaked

This seems like the most obvious explanation to me. Hollywood is all kinds of rapey and ****ed up.

How long would it take someone to find incriminating things among however many terabytes the hackers got?

And kind of hard to make the "something really incriminating was in those e-mails" with the theaters forcing Sony's hand more than anythin else.

So if movies can be shut down by highly unlikely to be followed through upon threats, why doesn't Al Qaeda threaten the next Bat Man, anything with a jew, cartoons, rom coms? Why stop at movies, McDonalds, putt putt, NYSE, black friday, dog groomers, quick oil change, street meat vendors.

Good point. No chance anything violent could ever occur at a batman movie

This Interview cancellation makes no sense except maybe that it was just a bad movie that Sony didn't want to spend more money on. Maybe I'm missing something.
Def not the case. they have advertised the **** out of this movie

The problem is depicting the assassination of a foreign head of government who is actually sitting. It would be very similar to if some sworn enemy of the U.S. (no idea who would fit today that would have a big enough pull for anyone to care) made a movie depicting the death of our current President. What would have been hilarious is if the movie actually depicted the leader of North Korea as a nice guy who is wildly misunderstood.

No one gives a s*** about movies depicting the death of the head of a terrorist organization, especially U.S.A.#1 movies.

North Korea is also dead confirmed to have no sense of humor.

Read a detailed review full of spoilers, and the movie seemed like they were using a veneer of comedy to make a serious point about the acceptable use of force in the post-9/11 world.

Frankly sounded like a bore.

Probably a lot better if they just made it Rogen/Franco hanging out and getting high with a misunderstood kid who just wanted some bros who weren't afraid of him 24/7.

Are you suggesting that if North Korea made a movie where Psy killed Obama, the US would hack... whoever... and release the details of their... bread line wait times? I'm not sure what would pass for a leak of a NK production company.

A central part of the difference between somewhere like North Korea and the US or UK is the tolerance for exactly this type of thing. Thinking that the US would react with something verging on an act of war if the UK released a movie where Obama was killed by Gervais is pretty stupid, even considering what the US has recently been exposed as sanctioning.

Possibly the stupidest thing I've heard has been people saying Sony is somehow complicit in these leaks for publicity reasons. Yeah, Sony has financed and marketed this movie, but THEY SUNK IT in order to SELL more tickets to OTHER MOVIES! Or - even stupider! - once they got hacked they COORDINATED with the TERRORISTS to also leak things that would FAN THE FLAMES of positive publicity!

I heard the North Koreans paid a well known Danish poker pro to do the hacking, but his name can never be spoken. And he did the actual hacking from a poker house in Thailand. But then they had to shut it down after a Russian mafia guy paid the Thai landlord to plant a trojan on the hacker's computer.

It's only "reasonable" to the extent that people are willing to accept irrational fear based decision making to be the organizing principle that we use to make basic decisions in our lives. People refusing to go to the movie theater because it might be bombed by North Korean infiltrators is just as ridiculous as it sounds.

The original extortion threats didn't even mention the movie, the hackers only started running with it after the media started speculating it was about that.
