In London, you get hit by cars that are driving on the left side of the road, while in New York, you get hit by cars that are driving on the right. Unless it's a one way street, then it's pretty much the same.

More interesting is that jimm "went to pieces" when he got a flat. Are you serious? If that level of adversity was enough to make you have a freakout, maybe excitement isn't something you should be looking for.

Why should I choose between being a bike messenger or an Omaha pro? Simply by attaching a laptop to my handlebars, I can do both at the same time!

True. I think it was mainly the getting lost that did it for me. I remember dropping my beaten-up old map and the pages flying everywhere into the road and I just panicked. The guy at the courier company said don't worry about it, come back tomorrow, and that I should stick it out. I should have done. When I gave my kit back, he said "Now you can go join the foreign legion!" I should have tried that, too.

Here's a video of a courier getting knocked over on Times Square. He doesn't seem too calm about it - but he could have been killed and anyway it's his livelihood gone, so fair enough:

Re: Should I quit my desk job to become a cycle courier?

I worked as a bike courier for over 4 years during high-school. Made good money (in Switzerland), was in top condition, learned a ****load about bikes...but let me tell you one thing.

YOU DO NOT WANT TO BE A BIKE COURIER IN A PLACE THAT HAS A REAL WINTER!!!

It's a fun job, but I'd look at it more as a hobby like mountainbiking instead of a job. If you want money, there's better things...but it's a fun sport, and you can even go do championships!

You know how bad pollution is in London? I cycled around it daily for 2 weeks work experience, and it really affected my skin, i would also sneeze black soot into tissue paper... can't be good... Even if the pay was £20 an hour, i wouldn't be a cycle courier.
If you want some adreniline and excitment, join the navy.

this topic has to be a joke.. who would leave a decent job to work a crap job that requires physical labor just to lose weight? so make your good cash, go home from work, and work out 1 hour at home everyday before u go play poker online all night... seems pretty obvious to me

It's not just about getting fit. It would be for the adrenaline of it. And of course when I set my mind on something I have to do it obsessively - so, I can't just decide to get fit, I have to make it my job and do it for 40 hours a week. But this is a bad idea, since I really don't think I could keep it up long term.

I found a good comment on Youtube:

"How did bike messengers ever come to be seen as these countercultural figures when all they do is deliver packages for corporations? Bike Messenger is like the original outsourced, no benefit occupation. The opportunity to wear fun clothes doesn't make up for it."

Anyway I think I've found the solution: I have a friend who works nearby who told me he often goes cycling for an hour or two after. So I'm going to join him and hopefully make it a regular thing.

Also, rather than wasting the weekends on poker forums and railing, if I really want to get fit, I could try spending the day cycling round the city instead. But the difference would be I could go where I wanted, stop when I wanted, while still earning easy money in the week.
