Re: Words with Friends (WWF) - Containment /Strat Thread

just started playing - god the scoring system in WWF is so tilting. i had a spot where i probably should not have played a bingo because it set up a triple word/triple letter spot. that's pretty terrible tbh

That happens all the time.

If you leave open vowels next to a TL square without regard for available big-scoring tiles, you do so at your own risk.

WWF doesn't know rimjobs. I coulda had triple word and triple letter on J.

I agree the strategy totally changes in when you can try words and there's no penalty for being wrong. Also being able to lay words on the board and play with them visually is a big help.

Btw my second and third games I got a blank and used 7 letters first play. Is that fairly common if you get a blank?

right but i am complaining because my best play was probably not to lay down my 55 point bingo that left an A in the triple triple lane with most of the premium tiles out there. in scrabble i can't really think of a situation where you would intentionally not play a playable bingo.

Re: Words with Friends (WWF) - Containment /Strat Thread

Yeah, I got that, and it's just a function of the scoring system.

I've probably played ~300 games so far, and have let bingos goat least 7 or 8 times. It's just not worth 45-50 points when you open up the easy TL/TW combo.

An interesting (to me, anyway) dynamic about that is when you have an opportunity to play a relatively low-scoring bingo in proximity to both TW squares. What you're really doing is hoping that bingo + one TW is significantly better than your opponent's seemingly inevitable TW.

What's the most you can possibly score with one 8-letter word (so assuming a bingo but no cross-scores)?

Re: Words with Friends (WWF) - Containment /Strat Thread

Dunno if this is right (probably not) I just did a search for words containing q and z, and "mezquits" looks pretty sexy. If you build it across the TW/TL/DW row, it's, what, 294 + 35 = 329?

Re: Words with Friends (WWF) - Containment /Strat Thread

i'm occasionally scoring 400+ vs a few friends but still haven't had a bingo and i've been playing for over 6 months i'd say.

btw for those on iphone who are jailbroken, there is a hack available that lets you play any words, starting games with randoms then dropping ridiculous words doesn't get old.

android port of this game is so much worse than iphone.

Actually in Scrabble this situation comes up relatively frequently, as strategy is getting more advanced it's becoming more and more prevalent. That said, the board design in WWF is beyond awful. Usually it's correct to not open those TL-TW spots up because of the potential burn. If you're playing correctly you should spend most of the time ****ing around in the middle waiting for someone to open up a Dw-dw or a triple somehow, or until you get a solid bingo.

Alec Baldwin was thrown off a plane yesterday for playing WWF after the flight attendants asked everyone to put away their electronic devices.

Quote:
"Alec was asked to leave the flight for playing 'Words with Friends' while parked at the gate. He loves WWF so much that he was willing to leave a plane for it, but he has already boarded another AA flight," Baldwin's spokesman Matthew Hiltzik says in a statement quoted by Reuters.

Curious as to what everyone's highest-scoring games are. Here's a couple I played recently:

890 combined, against offTopic. RESISTOR, SUBITEM, QUARRELS, and FOOLING were all on consecutive turns (first and third one were mine, as well as LIGHTED earlier in the game).

969 combined, against a chick who's halfway decent but leaves the board way too open. INTERIM and TORRENTS were both mine, as well as the non-bingo double-doubles PLOTZED and BURDENS. She picked up most of the high-scoring triples, including the 96-point JEON.

Bingos are a lot easier to see when you have common suffixes in your rack and you lock those up and only look at your other letters. like -ED, -ER(S), -ING(S)

Having -INGS and a blank is basically a guaranteed bingo

I can't take screenshots on my old droid, but just went back and looked at some of my scores and I lost one game against OffTopic 503 to 476, 979 points combined. I think there was one bingo and two TW/TL with Q and J.

BTW, I'm up for a couple of more games, TimonX is my username.
