ETA: the 4th game in my last 10 log was you beating me on 12/30. The games do tend to run together, I'm sure it's happened before.

I try to open up the board unless it exposes me to some huge triple-triple obv. I figure I have a pretty good vocabulary so I might have an edge on an expanded board anyway.
There's a math element that I don't see brought up too much...it isn't pure defense for me for the sake of keeping the board closed. I'll open it up but I am hoping to have two big hits to my opponent's one, if that makes any sense.
The games really seem to swing on who can get the TL/TW combos. Your opponent can get the other TW in that same corner, but not the TL.
IMO, hooking those two DWs in the next adjoining row/column is super risky. I used to really try to get that, but it seems to only open up both TW corners.

It's not like defensive play can't be fun, I do appreciate a play where the opponent recognizes the vulnerable bingo lines and the tiles I have left in the endgame and makes a perfect blocking move. Or when they manage to work around the block, like the time I had a late 30-point lead on offTopic, dutifully made a word parallel to the only open tiles on the board and drew the last few tiles, then watched him extend the ER I just made into CLATTERER for the upset. @#$%...
Ha! I remember that, but I'm still like .250 against you
