By the way, regarding seeing the whole field, you know you can do this on iPhone by double tapping the board right?
Yeah but it's hard to see the whole board an play with our tiles at the same time. And it's just harder to play with your tiles in general.

Re: first move strategy discussion above

Another way to approach your first move is using it to balance out your rack...if you have good bingo potential but with a couple too many vowels for example, you can drop a quick AE or OI or whatever. Still really leaves nothing great for your opponent to play off of, plus gives you a chance for a bingo on move 3 where you'll probably have some better bonus squares to play off of.

By passing to open the game, you're still stuck making that 2nd move, where your options still won't be that great (you'll have access to some TL squares, but not in a spot where you can use them two ways or anything.

Speaking of openers, I NEVER make a 5 letter double off the bat. I usually just throw out 2 or sometimes 3 crap letters that I don't want in my rack.

My reasoning is its just not worth enough to open up the board that much. If your letters are all low values, then you wind up with like 12 points, which is probably not worth it to give him 5 good letters to build off of with bonus squares well within reach. OTOH, if you have high scoring letters like Q, X, Z, etc, you'd be better served waiting to drop them on 2L/3L squares when they become available.

Opening into the DW with a 5 letter word is a sucker play IMO.

it's not a sucker play if you are a good player. if your goal in the game is just to try to get the big consonants and play them in advantageous spots, where's your edge overall?

Yeah think of it like swapping letters but you get points. I will say that you should avoid at all costs putting a vowel in between those DLs, though. Always super tilting to drop a 5 letter DW word for like 16 points and then have your opponent play "FA/FA/AN" for 21 points.

My edge against most players I beat is being more aware of/making better use of the bonus tiles. Part of this is resisting the urge to throw out a 5 letter opener for 12 points, or more points but failing to maximize my big scoring letters.

FWIW I'm no expert, and I get beaten soundly by some people. Just putting my initial thoughts out there as a fairly new player and hopefully creating some discussion in the process.

yeah that's fair - i agree that dropping a 12 point first word isn't very good but if i have a 5 letter word that has a B, C, F, G, H, M, P, V, W, Y and doesn't use an S, it's getting played. probably playing a J or Z word also.

Does it annoy anyone else that when showing the last play in the notifications and the game list, they use the longest word created instead of the "real" word that was made? It tilts me when I think my opponent made some harmless low-scoring word like TIRES only to find they actually hung an S off of TIRE in the process of playing ZAPS on a triple or some such ****.

The biggest thing that bugs me is how poor of a job they do of keeping the iPhone, iPad and PC in sync. I get told about the same victory and get all the other notifications on all 3 devices, even though I really only need to see them once. Also the chat notification always says there is new chat and doesn't recognize that I already viewed it on another device.

Come on Zynga - $billion company I know you can fix this ****.

Biggest thing that bugs me is the variance when your first 30 tiles are all vowels and 2pts or under... Yes id love 4 i's please that would be great.

highest word here for me was only like 109, DISRUPT on the TW and TL and KALES going down. Actually ended up turning it into DISRUPTORS for my longest word. Highest game score was like 530, but haven't broken 500 since.

I figure i'm alright at this game, usually destroy my friends but they aren't that good...if anyone wants to play look me up... username : Dont Let Up

I'm 0-2 vs 2p2ers... One was just sad as I got vowel pummeled early then consonant pummeled late and I think I even swapped twice just for a hope and a prayer other one I left the door open after being up an ok amount and then tactical error at end left me with too many points in rack when he went out and I lost by 5 and I would have ended it next turn

I know my major leak is I only bingo like never, and you kids hammer them all day

i bingo a lot less than i used to for two reasons:

1) people who aren't good think you're an *******
2) people who are good tend to take advantage of you opening up the board and bingos are rarely worth that much because Q,J,Z type bingos are hard

In before "no money in WWF, everyone's solid".

The competition is definitely at a higher level among 2+2ers, who won't offset your bad tile luck with bad plays like opening triples and dropping high-point tiles for no bonus. Against family and friends, I was winning at a .750 clip against my wife (the only really decent Scrabble player I know IRL) and well over .900 against everyone else, who lacked either the necessary vocab skills, or the tactical skills, or both. Against 2+2ers I'm pretty solidly at .500, maybe slightly over, after a few dozen games.

^^Same experience as GMan, I was killing randoms before starting to play 2+2ers, but I lost ~75% of my first matches against this crowd. I had to adjust my strategy to be extra careful not to leave TL/TW/DL spots open. I think I'm a bit above .500 now, but almost every game is really close.

Unless you're a true expert scrabble player like Paul Phillips, I think WWF has gigantic variance. Like you'd need a sample of 500-1000 games to know anything about your winrate.

I played someone who posted their name earlier in this thread, can't remember who, but we had some good games. Think I went 1-3 but they were all close.

I feel like I'm getting worse at this game. I used to spend time looking for moves, now I'm just lazy and play the first decent thing I see.

2+2ers are definitely wayyyyyyyyyyyy above the average WWF player.
