Did you see that iron cross Alex Puccio did? Where she was essentially stuck between two walls and went legs free and shifted all her weight from one side of the cross to another? That blew my mind
Rewatched and it looks like it was a partial cross between a horrible pinch and a terrible sloper

Alex Honnold becomes first ever to free-solo El Capitan. http://www.nationalgeographic.com/ad...rk-el-capitan/

Mind-boggling.

Quote:
On Freerider, one of the most daunting physical and mental challenges Honnold faced was two pitches of steep, undulating expanse of rock about 600 feet up. Polished smooth by glaciers over the millennia, the granite here offers no holds, forcing a climber to basically walk up it with his feet only. Honnold used a delicate technique called “smearing,” which involves pressing his rubber shoes against the rock to create just enough grip to support his weight on the incline. He had to keep his weight perfectly balanced and maintain enough forward momentum to avoid sliding off. “It’s like walking up glass,” Honnold said.

Since Saturday I've been trying to explain (and failing) the significance of this to non-climbers. Still tough to wrap my own head around it. People idolize athletes for their toughness just because they can make a tackle or knock down a three at the buzzer. But the mental toughness required to do what Alex has done is on a completely different level.

I just tried to watch the ~ 5 minute video on Honnold that's in the Nat Geo article. I couldn't even finish it due to stress and I'm sitting on my ass on the couch. Crazy.

Incredible feat by Honnold for sure. Dude is a beast.

I'll be posting some TRs I did while in Thailand last month soon. No other climbing trips planned for the summer unfortunately.

There's a special on Netflix that features him and other climbers. It's called Yosemite Rising. I watched it about a year ago. Not sure if it's still on. But it's insane.

People aren't grasping what this dude just did. The first person to climb El Capitan took like 2 months to do it. With equipment. This dude did it in 4 hrs. And he did it as casually as I hike 5 miles around a lake. It's like running a mile in 30 seconds or hitting 350 HR's in a single season.

Honnold is up there w/ people like Babe Ruth, Serena Williams, Muhammad Ali, Usain Bolt, Michael Phelps, Jim Thorpe and Michael Jordan.

Even higher when you consider a mistake can lead to death.

Been seeing this climb on the news, was wondering how many times he would have climbed this with equipment to prepare? Like 100s?

He did it enough times that he had completely memorized the exact sequence of holds and moves to navigate the more challenging sections. He's had the plan to free solo Freerider for years -- he says he first began to imagine it in 2009 after he did Half Dome. I'm in awe of the mental toughness to tackle such a feat -- the climbing is difficult enough, but there are other guys who have the technical skill whereas the mindset is a whole different thing.

I have a bit of a mixed reaction to these big free solos -- it's exciting but kind of reckless and it seems like a couple guys die every year doing them. But, they are living large until they do. Ultimately, not the place of the rest of us to tell them how to live, I guess.

I finally watched Free Solo on Friday night and even knowing the outcome in advance- I was still on the edge of my seat. It’s the first movie or show I’ve watched in some time that I didn’t check my phone one time!

Nice bump. I also enjoyed Free Solo very much (though biased).

Anyone here still rock climbing? any fun trips this summer?

Realizing I never posted my TR from Thailand last year. I'll have to organize that and get it posted.

Ever since my friend moved to Colorado a few years ago, I’m 100% in the gym and bouldering.

I finished one of my projects yesterday. Very few things are more satisfying than starting with a problem where I couldn’t do move #1 the first day and then session by session hitting 1-2 extra moves. Yesterday knocked it out on the second try.

I’ve gained a lot of weight over the last year due to injuries and a really ****ty diet. I’m at a big plateau in climbing but I’m confident that when I drop the first 10 lbs I’ll make a leap in performance.

Oh well, can still get strong in the gym. I will be going outdoors to Arkansas in a few weeks to my normal crag, Horseshoe canyon ranch (where 24 hours of horseshoe hell is located). Keep working hard and try to do more circuit training.

Good climbing movies on Netflix right now are: Meru, The Dawn Wall, Free Solo, and Valley Uprising.

Just watched Dawn Wall over the last 2 nights and that was really awesome as well.

I knew that Caldwell is / was a tremendous climber but had no idea about losing a finger or his experience in Kurdistan.
