Re: Rock Climbing

*sigh* thread really makes me want to get back into climbing. Did it for a couple of years in the past then it just fizzled out as I ran out of time.

BTW, Steph Davis and Dean Potter free solo'ing FTW:

Re: Rock Climbing

I enjoy climbing a lot, even though I'm not particularly good at it. I've been to Horse Pens 40 in AL a few times, which is considered the best bouldering site in the southeast.

Anyone else been there? I'd really like to go to Hueco Tanks if I get the time...love to see a TR from there as I saw a few people mentioned it already.

Mandatory Sharma clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yoYjuLWggto Dreamtime isn't the prettiest problem, but V15 is just sooo sick.

Re: Rock Climbing

You will die in June at Red Rocks. Options: Wake Up Wall, 5.10d and up; Black Velvet Canyon, 5+ pitches on every route (bring 2 ropes and much gear); Mt. Charleston (if you can warm up on 5.12b).

Like I said in the other thread they have guys you can have take you out to the best spots but its all marked and if you wanted you could kayak out with a friend tie off and deep water solo all day. Theres great spots super safe that you can boulder up as high as you could possibly want and just dive right off, rinse and repeat all day and have a ***** amazing time. Wish I were one of the rich mofos on MTVs cribs cause first thing id do is build a sick bouldering wall over my pool :P
I'm planning a trip to Krabi now to learn how to rock climb and all the above sounds absolutely perfect to me.

My mental plan is 3 wild nights in bangkok and then 7 - 10 days in Krabi doing the 3 day course and then hopefully doing 3 more days of it. Any recommendations on best session to go? Best place to stay if rock climbing was the priority? Best close place to stay if i wanted some night life too? Any school recommendations?

Many thanks

Awesome deep water soloing video.

Re: Rock Climbing

Again, a bump to see if anyone has gone anywhere since the last bump. (or anything to add, pictures, etc)-

I've been to a few different places in the last year for climbing. I just got back yesterday night from my first trad trip...I am ****ing awful at trad leading (I did a 5.5 and had my friend follow who then checked my protection...not good). We climbed in Eldorado Canyon near Boulder, as well as Boulder Canyon and Vedauwoo in Wyoming (no pictures yet).

Here is me leading a 5.7 (lol) in Boulder Canyon-

Leading is alot different than top roping and something that can't really be felt until you do it. I'm still relatively noob at it and can only do easier sport routes.

I climbed up Pão de Açúcar in Rio, Brazil-

Climbed in La Paz, Bolivia-

Climbed in Cordoba, Argentina-

sooo...post your pictures/TRs!

I hurt my shoulder climbing this summer now I can't play Ultimate. Or climb. But Ultimate is more important.

actually that's not true. take a look at this video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cxqMTwx4LZM

grigris are just as safe as ATCs for lead belaying when used correctly. just like anything, it's as safe as the user is competent. it took me a very long time before I actually felt like I knew what I was doing with a grigri.

here are some books to check out:

a must-read for any new trad climber:
http://www.amazon.com/Climbing-Ancho...2950478&sr=1-1

one book on climbing technique:
http://www.amazon.com/Self-Coached-C.../dp/0811733394

if you feel like reading some forums, go to rockclimbing.com and read everything by rgold. posts by jt512, angry, and cracklover are also pretty much 100% on.

As for the "Dan Osman" props, go read the book "Fall of the Phantom Lord", pretty awesome book summing up what it takes to be Dan Osman. Also if you wanna watch a movie about the best climber YTD, go watch King Line about Chris Sharma.
The high school I teach at does a Summer Academy, which is just for fun, no credit. Another teacher and I did "Physics of Rock Climbing." The other teacher brought in King Lines to show one day. I was in awe as were most of the kids. Definitely worth a watch.

Re: Rock Climbing

I blew a tendon pulley 5 months ago and it still isnt 100% so I cant climb as hard as I would like, so this thread bump makes me sad.

I plan on spending this fall in Hueco Tanks (spent a month there last year) so hopefully Im back to feeling strong by then.

Re: Rock Climbing

Hey there,

nice, a thread about climbing on a Poker forum. Indeed climbing is the nuts! I love it, do it 2-3 times per week in the gym in winter, and when the weather is good lots and lots outside... Was last weekend bouldering in Fontainebleau - man that place is great! - see picture below. Anyone else from mid europe here? Could meet and climb outside in summer, and discuss some pokerz, too :-)

Cheers, Esox.

Re: Rock Climbing

Any experienced climbers in Austin,TX? I went on a climb for my first time last week and it was pretty awesome (the Barton Creek Greenbelt). I'd love to get a real climber as a mentor!
