Re: Rock Climbing

I've been climbing quite a while, mostly long trad/aid/big wall. So if you have any questions specific to those I can probably help. As others have said, gym climbing and bouldering are the most accessible ways to get into the sport and meet people. A good way to get into trad climbing if you and a friend get psyched but don't know anyone more experienced is to look around for guides or classes in your area.

Aid climbing in Zion.

Me about to pitch off a climb in Red Rocks, near Vegas.

Pro tip: The bag from a box of wine will hold up remarkably well inside a haul bag.

Re: Rock Climbing

i just started watching documentay's about the sport, and definitely recommend..

The fanatic search = focusing on Dani Andrada and Chris Sharma

First Ascent = Focusing on Didier Berthod

The sharp End.. Really good also..

Re: Rock Climbing

anyone go on any cool trips since the time this was posted?

i did some top ropping in thailand...still not really good enough to lead yet i don't think, though, i plan on learning soon.

it's funny looking at this thread (now bumped) because i climbed at the same spot that schmitty recommended, in krabi.

some pics of top ropping-

unfortunately no climbing in nebraska

i plan on taking another trip overseas somewhere (maybe back to thailand, not sure) for a bit, hopefully will do some outdoor climbing then.

joined this new gym in omaha where the rating system is all ****ed up...insanely stiff, and harder than any other gym/rating system i've seen (ive been to indoor gyms in seattle, nebraska, cali). normal 5.10s are like 5.8+ or something here.

Outside of this, I would def advise learning lead climbing as quickly as possible. Although top roping is safer, there are many great routes all over the world that you simply cannot climb without leading. Go to a good gym that has leading bolts in place, or to France (Fontainebleau has some great small lead routes and is a boulderers paradise), or try and find a parnter who is experienced so you can do the second lead a few times and see how it all works.

Being the first lead is quite unnerving at first, due to the rope haging between your legs, but is much more rewarding when you complete a big climb than anything you can ever feel top roping imo.

Oh, and youtube 'Dan Osman' and copy his technique and nothing else about his climbs - guy was one crazy sob :)
I've watched some of his vids but just decided to youtube him again. I just don't understand it man, that **** is insane.

the ratings are the degree of difficulty. the higher the number the more difficult the climb.

Dan Osman got what he deserved imo.

2p2 is probably not the best place for climbing advice. Best advice: try to hook up with someone with experience. Experience is the one and only attriute that will keep you from dying in a precarious situation. Do not let bravado steer your climbing.

Re: Rock Climbing

I just started rock climbing maybe 6 months ago. I live in Chicago so the climbing obviously sucks around here. The only real climbing I've done was a trip to Red River Gorge in Kentucky, and it was definitely worth the 7 hour drive. Heres a pic of me top roping a 5.10a.

Being used to the crappy 25 foot wall in my gym, the 80 foot climbs kicked my ass pretty good. So hopefully next time I go my forearms will have enough endurance to make it up a 5.10a in one go. Just started learning to lead climb too so that should be interesting. I don't consider myself afraid of heights but I know I'm gonna crap my pants before doing a tough move pretty high above a bolt.

Man I want to go to Thailand so bad! Deep water soloing sounds so god damn sweet. If anyone is going anytime soon I would love to join in.

Gym ratings are something to be generally ignored. The typical gym-route setter has no idea how to set a good route, and most indoor routes are pretty contrived anyway. Plus, someone who climbs, say, 5.13 is going to barely remember what a 5.9 should feel like. Sort of like trying to pull moves at a 2nl table when you're a 200nl grinder. Some things just don't work. But fwiw, most outdoor routes have no real difference between 5.5 and 5.9, sometimes even 5.10a. Once you get above 5.10a, you'll start to feel differences among routes, but even this is route-type-dependent. I've onsighted thin, crimpy, just-vertical 5.12a, but have never redpointed overhanging thuggish 5.12a.

tl;dr: just use the gym to get in shape for outdoors.
