Saw His Purpleness during his "residency" at the Forum in 2011, IIRC it was the last night or the second to last night of it. It was ****ing amazing. The hits just kept on goddamn coming. Mary J. Blige opened and was incredible. They did a duet on "Nothing Compares 2 U".

Opinions are like *******s, but refusing to acknowledge his greatness seems super lol to me.

He was most definitely a strange character, but genius-types tend to be like that.

Because if there's anything you should put stock in, it's breaking news following a big story. SMH.

I remember watching him play basketball in high school. Well, not so much remember watching, but as a white farm-boy I remember hearing his first name and thinking WTF kind of name is that?

ETA: Anyone that thinks Prince was overrated musically is a moran. If anything he was underrated.

I'll admit it's an unpopular opinion.

I give both of them credit for creating a persona, selling themselves and putting out pop music that appeals to many people.

But, objectively most of their music isn't that good. Not nearly as good as some people make it out to be.

Most people's reverence of those two is because they grew up with them and their childhood memories are coloring their view of them.

There are some artists that I grew up with and listening to them objectively now I can accept that I really overrated them when I was young.

Prince wrote and produced all his own material, he even played all of the instruments on some of his stuff. Although I never saw him play live I've never heard anyone who did say he was anything but incredible every time. I mean what does it take for someone like esad to recognize a unique talent? You can do that even without being a fan. Hell, I think he wrote some great songs but a lot of his stuff (possibly most) I don't really care for. But it's impossible to ignore the ability and talent the man had. Truly one of a kind.

There is no "objectively" in music.
But if you wanna go there, the guy created a lot of iconic songs, plays all of his instruments and has written and produced ****-ton of very successful songs from Sinnead O'Connor, the Bangles to Madonna,so "objectively" you're just plain wrong.

Esad my guess is you have heard a very small portion of Prince's music, to say he was prolific from the late 70s-90s would be an understatement.

He's an underground musician who happens to have a small portion of his music become so popular that it's considered "pop". And as far as marketing himself is concerned I think that his eccentricity actually hurt that.

He made an album that featured the guitar in a way that even the most die-hard metal head of that time respected, then two albums later did the same thing with the bass. Both albums are routinely cited as top albums of all time. That alone puts him into the GOAT discussion, but to add all of the other great works and his production/writing, well he was just the man.

What is not subjective is that Prince was an amazing guitar player and musician. You can subjectively not like or enjoy his music but to say he was overrated is silly. He was vastly underrated as a musician in the public. His peers know better.

huge +1 I was never a big fan of his music but u can't deny his greatness and man could he shred a guitar.

that cover of while my guitar gently weeps (one of the GOAT songs) was amazing and primarily due to his incredible solo.

oh ya and dude was a boss.

before halftime show one of the producers calls him up n is like "it's raining" prince responds "can you make it rain harder?"

RIP

edit: oh and as far as I'm concerned the true mark of a great musician is how they perform live I could care less how someone can be produced, and by all accounts his shows were up there with the best ever.
u simply can't do that without being tremendously talented.

When people die, people massively overuse "one of a kind". But Prince was truly one of a kind.

esad,

Your opinion about Prince is dog****, like everyone has said. But that Kevin Smith story was pretty great, even if it is half an hour long.

It's all over the internet already so nothing original here, but Prince playing at the Super Bowl in the rain was a great, great performance.

Yeah seems weird to be putting this out there so matter of factly.

Then again it does fit the whole dying-of-flu thing.

Saw him a live a couple of week ago in Toronto. No band, just him and a piano - the man could command a room and killed it on the piano. Anyone was saying he wasn't a fantastic musician simply hasn't heard much of his library.

The guy was creating original music non-stop. He had a tiny window in the 80s where he was super famous for maybe 3 albums but has released 30+ albums since with diverse styles all recorded from his home studio and he usually played all the instruments. He was definitely one of a kind.
