Police are saying this man

was walking naked along a highway in Miami when he happened across a 65 year old homeless man, and for the next 18 minutes he was chewing the guys face off

You know, I'm going to go out on a limb and say that the cops might have had legitimate reason to fear for their life if they tried to approach/tackle a naked, clearly high as **** dude eating the face off another dude. To say nothing of the life of the victim of the face eating, which was already in jeopardy.

Not all agencies have stun guns/bean bag guns, and even if an agency does have them, not every cop is going to be equipped (especially not with the non-lethal guns/bullets). You're going to need stopping power against someone high enough TO BE EATING OFF ANOTHER PERSON'S FACE! Hmmm, let's see. Unarmed submission technique? Baton?

Although if there were already like 10 cops on the scene this might be different. If this was the first cop on scene, shooting is the logical response. The other alternatives (wait for back-up? Crap, there goes an eyeball; I know, I'll whack his legs with my baton. And there goes the other eye...) seem pretty bad.

Yeah, I think most everyone in the civilized world is anti "judge, jury, and executioner" but when a mother ****er is eating faces, some things can be be settled immediately.

Hell yes. I think its fair to say most people let alone the police would never witness such a macabre and gruesome attack on a human by another HUMAN.
I think, and believe the cop would have been terrified for his own life and probably saw up close that the poor homeless guy had no face left and the attacker was not stopping, KILLING him was fully justified, especially considering the first shot/shots simply 'pissed' the attacker off.
