If you've ever tried to play a radiohead song, you know that it is extremely difficult. They are extremely talented.

I think it's a mistake to try to get anyone to agree on the best band of "our time," let alone a bunch of OOTers. That said, I voted yes just out of the number of times I've chosen "15 Step" to try out different speakers and headphones.

difficult to play does not mean good music

there are tons of guitar wankers out there who cannot write one catchy riff, they just arpeggiate and shred into oblivion a-la yngwie. and it sounds like ****.

Technical talent is orthogonal to musical greatness.

+1 more. Maybe just not my kind of music. I prefer less emo, more angry/exciting/happy/fun/whatever music. It's just kind of...boring. Not music I would complain about someone playing, but probably not what I pick myself. I'd stick to almost all of the other bands that have been mentioned.

while i agree that radiohead is the best band of the last 20 years (even though i like The White Stripes better) this is a terrible metric. this is true because Thom Yorke can't read music so most of the stuff he writes isn't based on conventional music theory. That being said i am surprised by anyone who can listen to Paranoid Android and not be extremely impressed with the talent and depth the band has.

If 1995-1997 is "our time," then I'd probably agree. Radiohead hasn't put out a listenable album since OK Computer, though.

Hail to the Thief is 100% "Listenable"...what's wrong with it?

Radiohead is probably the most overhyped band of our time. I like them but honestly I think pablo honey was their best point.

That is 1 great criterion right there.

Radiohead's early stuff was awesome (pre-1996 and some of OK Comp), then they felt like writing a good "mainstream sounding" rock song was somehow like not artistically dignified and started making their songs sound like they come from another planet.

That does not equal "good".

If they would have basically just churned out those awesome, pure rock songs they used to write, they would be better. I know that sounds weird because they wouldn't be "challenging" themselves artistically but really that's all they had to do was keep writing stuff like "High and Dry", and "Creep", etc.

The song in the closing credits of the 2nd video I was a bit more okay with at least to start.
Do you know what the phrase I used means? Thom Yorke is pretty universally recognized as having some of the best vocal capacities around, and I gave two songs where he's carrying a note for extended periods of time. Again, if you don't like his voice, great, but he can sing very well.

Radiohead's later stuff>>>Radiohead's earlier stuff imo

FWIW, I can understand why a lot of people would not agree.

Given the fact that OP hasn't posted in this thread since it started, the chance this thread is a prop bet is >50% imo.

this.

but then again i find almost everything released nowadays to be trash. i add 3 or 4 new albums each year to my collection i used to buy 3 dozen albums a year in the late 90s. i feel music nowadays is ripped off, recycled and full of whinny wanna-bes singing about how they got hurt when their first relationship at the age of 14 ended.

no question radio head could be considered the best of this genre/time. But I would not argue about this subject for the same reason I don't read Rolling Stone.
If I had to pick one band contemporary with Radiohead that could compete for this title, I would choose Blur.
But I can understand why they would be excluded among an mostly American audience.

Radiohead has always sucked.

U2 was excellent from their early days through Joshua Tree. Since then they have been pretty much ridiculous though.

I have never heard a Radiohead song to my knowledge. Calling them the best band of our time is ridiculous.

Have you ever tried to play the bagpipes? It's extremely difficult. That doesn't stop them from sounding like ****. And what instrument are we talking about? I don't even think their music is difficult to play.

It's a combo. I don't like his voice AND I don't think he sings very well.

I can carry a note for an extended period of time too and I'm the worst singer ever.

calling you the biggest idiot in this thread, on the other hand, is plausible at worst

people saying radiohead have always sucked or have been unlistenable since OK Computer are really easy for me to cross of the list of 'people whose opinions about music i take remotely seriously.' i can understand if you're not in love with them or you're not always in the mood to listen to that sort of thing... hell there are several dozen bands i listen to far more frequently... but honestly in 20 years saying radiohead sucked will be like saying pink floyd or zepplin or sabbath sucked. you might find a few takers but in general people will laugh at you. i think floyd is probably the most apt (and often-made) comparison.
