cool, I get an excuse to dust off this old pic:

RHCP
pearl jam
U2
Nirvana

would all prolly be considered better.

maybe even:
green day
depeche mode
NIN

no question radio head could be considered the best of this genre/time. But I would not argue about this subject for the same reason I don't read Rolling Stone.

i don't think most people in a general poll of music fans would put modest mouse ahead of u2, pearl jam, metallica, RHCP, etc for "best band of the last 20 years"... but i definitely like them better than any of those bands and there is a decent subset of rock fans who do too. i don't think this is really an indie vs. mainstream issue when it comes to radiohead but if we were making a top 10 or 20 then that issue would probably come up, and my list would make all of you want to beat up a hipster somewhere.

tiedup i don't know why you're trolling but i haven't really said anything about 'indie' music or anything remotely controversial... so i guess you are just jealous that i am still a way better poster than you? like 80% of my posts on 2p2 are about music these days so if you just want to follow me around and post that pic, cool, gl i guess. it's really creative and awesome, good job, maybe in 5 months or so you can make a 2nd mspaint of me, this time in a pavement shirt with pizza stains on it.

noze candy, TVOTR are good and all but i think you're jumping the gun on that one

(I mean...as long as we're just listing random bands that are not 'the best of our time')

Radiohead is hands down the best band of the last 20 years.

This. Let's put some other bands up with the same question and see how they do. While claiming that they are by far the best band isn't the most rock solid fact, claiming they're not even in the discussion is just stupid.

OP did an OK job of giving examples but failed when starting with Reckoner. Pyramid Song is probably in the top 5 along with

How To Disappear Completely
Paranoid Android
Idioteque
and The National Anthem

I'll take the internet fanboys over the general public's opinion.

That's too bad you don't like the voice because you can't deny (4:30 to end) that the guy's got pipes (3:20-3:45)

FWIW, I tentatively agree with OP. I cannot offer a better candidate. It might be the "our time" label that just about seals it for me. Who has been as consistently good over the past 10-20 years? I can't think of anyone, and I'm like, really into music and stuff.

As an aside, Wilco are at least as good aorn. They're a bit too mature to define a time (I hope it comes accross what I mean here, I'm not going for some backhanded swipe) but go see them live and they'll blow you away. Also, like Radiohead, they have a sound that is completely their own.

Radiohead is in the same category as U2, bands who are terrible and yet somehow immensely popular among people who otherwise like decent music. It is a baffling phenomenon.
