Most modern guitarists can't hold a freaking candle to Page, Clapton, Hendrix, Alvin Lee, and tons of other guitar players from 40 years ago. Look at the crap that passes for R&B now compared to Motown. There are a few exceptions, but to say that the average level of musicianship among recording artists now is anywhere close to what it was 40 years ago is, well, crazy talk.
