I don't think Zeppelin are incompetent musicians, they're all okay, though nobody in the band is great, much less world-class. Page and Bonham are pretty over-rated, and Page is about as sloppy as he can be. Jones is terribly underrated with respect to his bandmates, being far and away the most technically competent among them.

I merely loathe the material they wrote, or rather, the material they mostly stole, and it bothers me how revered thy are considering that the overwhelming majority of their fans just don't really give a **** about music, it was just what their older brother used to listen to in the Camaro on the way to the lake. Nobody sells that many records to actual record nerds alone.

And, yes, maybe it's unfair to the band to hold it against them that most of their fans are musically simpletons, and are just suckling at the teet of Billboard and Rolling Stone, and sucking down whatever drivel they're spoonfed by rock radio, but you know it's so, and to pretend it's anything different is, at best, to be disingenuous. That was, however, my point in the first place, which you chose not to argue against because you were too busy being like, "but IIIIIII really like Led Zeppelin, and IIIII'M not like that!", and also because it's an unassailable point due to its factual accuracy.

I was a drummer in my youth, but I haven't owned a kit nor played in years. I'm primarily a metalhead, growing up in the 80's and 90's but I was baptised musically on 60's-70's prog like PFM, Genesis, and Emerson, Lake, and Palmer.

I did have my suspicions but was too lazy to check. I stand by my statement despite being a ****** myself.

Re Radiohead - I haven't properly listened to their later stuff as i was never a hardcore fan, but Ok Computer is definitely one of my favourite albums by any band. Bends and Kid A very good too imo.

This guy makes a good argument for Amnesiac being Radiohead's greatest album. If you can't stomach the entire thing, at least skip to p21 for the Like Spinning Plates write-up.

Haters will also enjoy the link, as it will support the theory that Radiohead fans are all brutally pretentious wannabe nerds who are determined to identify moments of artistic genius in everything Thom ever does.

Anyway I'm flying out to Poland with my daughter tonight. Thom and co are playing Open'er festival on Wednesday night, and if they roll the piano onto stage and Thom does Like Spinning Plates I may well drown in my own tears. Which is after all how any true Radiohead fan would choose to go.

It's gonna be a glorious day..

Froeg being a prog fan and metalhead makes perfect sense. Basically guaranteed pretentiousness overload. The musicianship is so poor! Lol gtfo.

I got love for simple, belligerent, 3-chord punk rock as well, as long as it's done right. This isn't simply about Bonham not being Colaiuta or something.

Anyway, I'm cool owning my snobbery.

My favorite part of this exchange is a dude in a Radiohead thread talking about other music fans being pretentious, which is just about the apex of paradox. Honestly, I'm not certain that Ray didn't say it in jest to further needle Radiohead defenders. If so, it's very well played by him.

And with that, I'll leave you guys to your circle-jerk until this thing shows back up on the front page in a few months and I get to lol again.

I was also at Glastonbury. Actually standing right next to double j. The best gig I have ever witnessed.

Clearly the best band of our generation by a distance.

What do people do at a Radiohead concert?

Surely the point of Radiohead is so you can talk about how good Radiohead is, not to actually listen to their god awful music? Just seems strange and counter-productive for them to actually have live concerts.

If you don't know the secret handshake they don't let you in. I'm afraid I can't divulge anymore.

Out doing Radiohead fans on the pretentiousness front is an achievement but you managed it.

I am much older than many of you here. Over time, I had heard that Radiohead was the next big thing. I listened to see for myself, but I was very unimpressed. Then, I tried again...and again...and again. There is not a single aspect of their music that is compelling to me. To each his own I guess...

Haha. Sorry Froegg, but this is pretty consistent with my experience as well. I will agree that Led Zeppelin was so wasted in a lot of their performances that How the West was Won was quite the cherry picked selection, and casts them in a better light than they deserve.

I've only seen Radiohead live once, but they were excellent.

That's the thing, music is subjective. There is no band or genre that even half of everyone would like.

Maybe? Name a band where this isn't true.

Any band that's reasonably successful is going to have a majority of fans that don't have a high acuity for music, since most people don't.
