Hello,
I posted this in the Science forum also, but I think its a bit missplaced, so here we go again

Three days ago a new report hit the pages of the internet with a thorough and deepgoing report regarding Stuxnet, the most menacing and complex virus to date. The report itself is so wellwritten and so precise its allmost like reading a thriller.

if you dont know anything about Stuxnet you should watch this movie first which gives a brief explanation about the virus and its target

Here is one of the researchs which dug into the virus, that explains some more

And here is the actual report.

Enjoy

Looks like scifi, but the future is allready here. War have allways been over money and dominance, I think in the future we will move closer towards a hackerwar whenever conflicts appear.

From the Wired.com link:
Quote:
The fact that Stuxnet was injecting commands into the PLC and masking that it was doing so was evidence that it was designed, not for espionage as everyone had believed, but for physical sabotage. The researchers were stunned. It was the first time anyone had seen digital code in the wild being used to physically destroy something in the real world. Hollywood had imagined such a scenario years earlier in a Die Hard flick. Now reality had caught up with fantasy.
This is fascinating.

I don't get it. This virus has a very specific target and a date to self destruct. Why again is this the most menacing virus?

I think it could be menacing if someone learned to use it's strengths with respect to damaging other systems. I think the key thing is how effective it can be and how stealthy it can be. The actual virus had a job and I guess did it. The problem is if someone learns how to use it for other types of targets--it'll be very tough to stop at this point.

Does anyone find it odd that the OP is talking about a virus and posted links?

because now instead of worrying about viruses hacking your facebook page and spreading spam or crashing your computer and erasing all your porn, you have to worry about viruses that hack a nuclear power plant and cause a meltdown that kills millions.

Its menacing because it opens a pandora's box. A computer virus designed to cause physical, real world damage to infrastructure? It was basically initially discovered through dumb luck and a team of guys who just randomly chose to devote all their time to figuring it out. If it hadn't been found in such a way who knows the amount of damage it might have caused.

It is also incredibly complex and sophisticated and hints at future cyberwarfare between states that have the resources to devote to something like this. As was said in the article, most viruses are simple, designed by relative amateurs, whereas this must have cost hundreds of thousands of dollars at a minimum and taken a lot of man hours to create.

It's just another weapon. The idea that the US and Israel were going to allow Irans' nuke program to continue is laughable. This is by far the most palatable way of disabling their program without any serious repurcussions.

Alobar, you really store porn?
