Quit my job today, have I made a mistake?

Hello OOT.

I'll cut to the chase.

I work as a mailman in the UK and today i decided to quit my job.

I'm 23 years old and this was pretty much my only source of income. I am backed online to play MTTs and i am a winner but with the stake i am on atm i can only play $33 MTTs and below (ovbiously losing half my profit).

My job was fairly straight forward. I had to go in at 9am every morning and "tie-down" the mail which was in the frame for me. Put that mail into bags, then go out and deliver it. Some days can be brutal when the weather is rough but that was never really a problem for me. The reason i decided to quit was that i was constantly being shafted by other workers/managers. Quite often when i would go in my frame would often be half full (it was another workers job to have my frame ready for me, some days it is tough as there is alot of mail to sort, but it is still not in my job description) I have no problem with sorting my own mail if i was warned in advance and hence would come in earlier and recieve overtime pay...

Here is a picture of a frame for anyone who doesn't know what they look like...

So say i am not told that my frame is not up and i come in at 9am for work. I have to sort the leftover mail which has a chain reaction on the rest of my job for the day - i don't have time to do other stuff which builds up and up and leaves me with a huge workload towards the end of the week.

I have been complaining to the managers for 9 months (my duration of work there) about these problems and they always promise change, but it never comes.

I was pretty confident about my decision until i spoke with my mother about it and she was really really pissed off, insisting that i had made a mistake.

So i bring this to OOT. Did i make the right decision? Was i right to stand up for myself and walk away? Is getting shafted just part of having a job and i should just bite the bullet and get on with it?

I told my boss today that i quit, but i have not yet handed in my notice.

Please ask any questions...just kinda threw this post together so there is probably some stuff missing.

Thank you for your time.

Typically people with jobs they don't like will look for another one, and then after getting a new job quit.

NEVER quit a job without having another one already. Worst case in a job like this, just stop complaining. Make up your mind that you are leaving, then it doesn't matter WHAT they do, you get paid the same no matter how you spend your day.

I did enjoy the job. That was never the problem. I enjoyed providing a useful service to my local community and the pay was decent. The weather could also be beautiful aswell as awful so that was breakeven...if you will heh.

The reason i quit is because i felt like i was being treated unfairly and no matter how many times i complained about it, nothing was done.

I worked 25 hours a week and made £200 per week (after paying tax).

Sounds like it was the perfect job for you. Where else you gonna get steady income from a job that you mostly enjoyed and allows you to play lots of poker?

The problem is you are not good at complaining. You should have come to this forum before you quit. There are many excellent complainers here. You might still have a job you enjoyed.
Any chance you want to take revenge on someone there?

Now you have to move back in with Mom. So, 'yes', you made a mistake.

Would you say you didn't like this?

Point is that quitting one job before getting another is dumb. If you stuck it out for 9 months I'm sure you could have continued and had a source of income while looking for a new job.

**** like that happens all the time at jobs. How long does it even take? The job as a whole sounds annoying to me, but if you like the job only your concern wasn't being addressed that's a pretty dumb reason to quit. Learning to handle **** like this, how to actually find solutions after your first attempt didn't work, I think is an educational part of an entry level job. How did storming out work? Playing poker might be better for you as a decision, but it has nothing to do with some extra work in the mornings.

Yeah, always get the next job first, then quit.

Re: Quit my job today, have I made a mistake?

I thought it was your job to sort the mail you are going to post that day?

If its not (like you said) why were you letting them take advantage of you for 9 months? Was any of the other workers having the same problem? Sounds to me like you have been getting trampled on for a long period of time and you have been letting them get away with it. You really should have nipped this in the bud from the very beginning
