I'm 44 and I think I'll race a 21yo who I work with tomorrow. We're both in ok, not great shape. He's a bit overweight, but not too bad.
Underestimating old people is really dumb. I play basketball with a bunch of guys at work who are in good but not great (and some in great) shape. Many in their 40s and 50s. The young guys are a lot faster at short distances generally, but not by a gigantic margin. There are plenty of young guys slower than the old guys. There's one guy who is the most overweight who is older who plays and we can all smoke him, but besides that, there are plenty of people 20 years older than me I'm a dog to (but I'm fairly slow).
