So at work the other day one of the young chicks (chick #1) at my office suggested that she could run faster than my office manager, 2+2er Mcpherzen. One of the other young chicks (chick #2) at my office agreed and felt that she could also run faster than Mcpherzen.

Since I am under the general impression that girls run slower than dudes, I laughed at them and suggested we bet on it. I offered 3:1 odds and they both accepted. During a conversation with Usher's special ladyfriend last night, she agreed that chick #2, whom she knows well, would be able to run faster than Mcpherzen, whom she also knows. So I booked action with her too.

The bet: A 50 yard footrace on grass.

The contestants:

Mcpherzen: My office manager and longtime friend. He is 38 years old and does not exercise. He cannot remember the last time he ran at full speed, and it has definitely been more than 5 years. When he was younger he was fast and athletic.

Chick #1 A 23 year-old who works at my office. She is strong and athletic and works out regularly. She has never ran competitively.

Her only experience with prop betting is that she fails at eating 100 oreos in 2 hours:



Chick #2 A 28 year-old who works at my office. We served together in the Army and she is very fit. She works out regulary also. She has never ran competitively but always finished at the front in any Army drill that involved running.

This seems like a lock to me. I"ll post a video of the race as soon as I can. Let's hear how OOT would handicap it.

seems like a fit girl should beat older unfit guy most of the time, and definitely more than 25% of the time to make your bets horrible.

Conventional wisdom tells us that you're a lock. But your buddy looks like he has a gut to him, and some chicks are straight up fast. I have a feeling you're about to get owned for whatever amount you bet.

this is what i think as well. some girls are ridiculous athletes as well, and it seems like these girls are working out and doing some running, while the guy is getting old and fat.

i wouldn't be surprised with either outcome, but i definitely wouldn't offer 3:1.

I think the old dude's ego drives him to victory at which point he pukes despite only running 50 yards. The fact that one girl was army makes it closer

I am a 38 year old who used to be real fast (I'd guess like top 3 percentile of guys my age when I was young) but hadn't run in a long time when I booked a prop bet last year against 4 younger guys, none of whom looked fast at all. Winner take all; 50 yard dash. I'm still real thin so no problem, I thought.

To say that I underestimated the effect of aging on my speed would be the understatement of the year. Around the 30 yard mark I felt like I needed to stop for a break.

Did I miss it, or did you say whether or not he will be allowed to train? For me, if I had trained, like at all, even for a week or two, it would have made a huge difference. I literally didn't run one time before the race and as soon as the race started I knew I was toast. It was like the signal from my brain to my feet got held up by my hamstrings. In my head I was just as fast as I had always been, but my legs just refused to move like I was telling them. It was a sad day watching these young fat dudes dust me.

If he trains at all, he'll win. If not, I'd bet on the girls. Also, remember to have the Chariots of Fire music handy.

Austiger, I think you're underestimating the difference between women and men running-wise.

Women have no idea how to run fast. Unless the girls who are prop betting were very good sprinters in high school or something, easy win for the guy. The only mitigating factor is that I say this as a pretty slow 22 year old who is fairly confident that I'm faster than most girls my age, I will very depressed if that is no longer the case in 15 years.

I'd be trying to hedge my bets with old guy that he won't be able to walk the next day without groaning at least once, nor will he be able to stand up straight, nor get up from a chair without making some kind of noise.

The first time you try to run fast after not running for years hurts.

Barring a past in high-level track and field, I guarantee you get smoked by any world-class female sprinter.

Yeah, this isn't basketball or something, running is pretty much straight fitness level.

One thing that seems like a like is the Oreo girl will lose. You should get some side action on whether she can eat a package of Oreos shortly before the race and not vomit after the sprint, just to spice things up a little.

Old guys, please tell me that you're exaggerating the pain felt after a short 50m sprint? That's not even an indoor track distance, if that's what I have to look forward to in the next twenty years, kill me now.

At 1:1 this is close. You giving 3:1 is ridiculous.

Going from what I remember from 100m WR times, female sprinters are like 10% slower than men right? 38 vs 23 and some training vs none would make up for that just about.

Was girl 2 actually in the army or just some boot camp exercise thing? Either way Ill take 100 on girl 2.

Also be glad you got this race fairly short. At 100 yards I'd need 1:2.
