there should be a drunk driving test where they see how many beers u can safely drive with in ur system ldo. I know for me I drive a lot slower/more safe when i'm drunk which prob 100% offsets the loss of reaction time I have. It's the tards who can't handle their liquor/drive fast as hell when drunk which ruin it for the rest of us responsible drunk drivers

also driving in the snow is more dangerous than driving drunk in my case and i'm sure many others
exactly right. I mean, if drunk drivers are arrested because they pose a public safety risk, then what about teenage girls who text and drive? They should get five years mandatory.

there is no way in hell that one of them could drive more safely than me after drinking ten beers.

What they really need to do it takes Senior citizens licences away. They are the worst drivers and usually driving on so many drugs and during the day at that.

I've never personally lost anyone to a drunk driver, but I know PLENTY who have. At least a dozen. One of my family members actually killed an off-duty police officer and his wife while driving drunk, orphaning their two small children in the early 80s. She got a little over a year in the county jail and 3 years court probation. If you wanna get technical, she's about 5'6 and weighs about 220, I would guess. She had had...3 beers that night.

You know, it really is...THAT SIMPLE. Not everything is so complicated. It's funny to me that you and so many others in this thread put SO MUCH EFFORT into learning how to make good decisions at the poker table, but so little effort into just using common sense and making a good life decision. Here's a bit of advise: Don't drink and drive at all. Period. Ever.

Well, we wouldn't want to inconvenience you, now would we? Let's ask someone who's had their family taken from them whether or not they give a **** if YOU think it's "practical" for a drunk person to take a cab home, instead of driving drunk.

Don't try to calculate the odds of something bad happening if you go w distance at x amount of beers and y body weight having had the drinks z hours ago. Don't try to rationalize how many beers you can have before you're a danger to yourself or others. Just don' t f*****g do it.

To put it in terms you'll understand: Drinking even ONE BEER...and getting behind the wheel of a car...IS ALWAYS...a -EV move.

For the record, texting, talking on the cell phone, browsing the web, eatin' a burger, reading a book, smokin' a J, b**ting off to a Hustler mag, or any other ******ed thing stupid people like to do while driving is also -EV. Anything that impairs your judgment or takes your attention off of DRIVING YOUR CAR is a pretty poor decision.

But I digress. Let the lame, poorly reasoned-out rebuttals and/or berating begin.

A good friend of mine died by crashing his car drunk. He should not have driven. But I'm not going to change my mind on the issue because of that. That would be results oriented, no?

I realize people get emotional about this stuff and for some reason have trouble making (real) sense of the data, but to get all righteous about anyone who drives after having anything to drink is pure emotion driven logic.

Simply put a safe drivers with a few drinks is never going to be as big of a problem as an unsafe driver (the worst category of which is obviously a hammered, speeding lunatic - which makes up the majority of DUI deaths). For some people, that's good enough. And some people are stupid and use that to justify extremely unsafe behavior. I'm not defending them. I'm simply pointing out the difference.

At 0.09 I am fine to drive home any night of the week even though it's illegal in the U.S. (this was legal not that long ago though.) At 0.12 I've started to up my odds of an accident a bit. At 0.15, I'm probably ok to drive a couple miles on back roads, but I hope I don't have to slam on my brakes for anything. Low odds of that happening, but run the numbers enough times and it comes up.

By the time I'm at 0.20 BAC, no way should I be driving. But am I alert enough to realize I'm that drunk? At that point you're no longer a good judge of yourself, and this is how even "good" drunk drivers cause problems.
I dunno about you, but when I start having trouble walking, I'm pretty good at figuring I shouldn't be driving. I don't think I've ever had a situation where I thought I wasn't drunk when I was. It's pretty obvious when you can't see straight, slur everything, and don't walk straight, even when drunk.

My family had to literally pry my grandpa's keys from his fingers. I can't imagine a worse driver in the history of driving than him when he finally gave up his keys.

Three incidents stick out. I can't even imagine how many near misses he had.

We had a cop show up at our house with the hubcab of a parked car that he had sideswiped.

My brother and I spent 4 hours digging him out of a snowdrift at the end of our driveway.

He backed right into a lightpole.

but keep stereotyping drunk drivers, they are all the devil and there isn't even 1 of them can drive safe. afterall one of your family members killed someone while over the limit, she had THREE beers in a night. anymore propaganda you'd like to tell us?
Never underestimate the power of denial. Or the fear of taking even a brief look at oneself. If you were making a valid argument, I would consider continuing this conversation. But you're not. You're not even using your head at this point. I feel like your next post might start with 'Yo momma.' I'm done trying to talk rationally to an obviously irrational moron. GL at life.

Well yeah but there is a point even before you start being unable to walk straight at which you need to hang up the keys. And if you constantly push the envelope, you're going to end up on the wrong side of that line at some point, or even often.

fwiw, im fine with the dui laws being .08. its proly a decent number to illustrate when most ppl are somewhat impaired.

im not fine with the self righteous indignation of alcohol+car = ZOMGMURDER.

and def not fine with checkpoints and bs cops traffic stops bc its late at night and the local muni is trying to make some dough.

baptzmoffire needs to go back to church and stop derailing the thread. The law is .08 not .00 so people can and will drink and drive. I wanted to know ways to prevent myself and others from driving over the limit.

back on track now I was thinking of buying a breathalyzer and putting it in the glove box which is a lot more reasonable then never drink a drop and drive.

something like this $150 or better yet a police grade model

Agreed, and same can be said for speeding tickets and red light/speed cameras. If there is one thing that needs to be changed regarding to driving, it is speed limits. No way you can tell me that on a 5 lane highway at 1 AM (not an interstate, so less traffic) it dangerous to drive more than 60.

It's one thing to make traffic laws with intent for safety, but it's another when it is strictly financial.

Which is why it is funny that people are upset over DUI laws. We have some of the loosest laws and tolerance (drinking and driving legal in 3 states) and people can't be mature enough to accept them.

But come on, it really doesn't take a genius to realize that one drink is going to be inconsequential toward somebody's driving ability, especially if they are having it during dinner.

Obviously you shouldn't drink and drive but.........

If your main concern is avoiding a DUI than I would argue that the time and your location of departure as well as route is of more importance. i.e. you're far less likely to get a DUI at noon leaving a grocery store than at 2:30am leaving a bar.

In Louisiana the limit is .08. But I'm pretty sure there's a law that if you are involved in a fatal accident it drops to .02 and you can be charged with vehicular homicide, possibly even if you weren't in the wrong. Not sure on the details but I try not to drive after more than 2 in a hour or so.
